Re: First time making wine (damsons)

Ah cheers, didn't realise that re. the nut.

Good point re. laying them down too, need to get a cheap wine rack!

Yeah I've only had a few sips, but it tastes pretty good to me. Will probably open a not entirely full
bottle later.

I think it should be ~12%

Just bottled the damson wine today, was crystal clear :)

The automatic bottle filler seemed to work pretty well too, to switch between bottles

1989: Howard Stableford tried out concentrated beer on Tomorrow's World

https://twitter.com/BBCArchive/status/1518633685964271616 Sounds like the beer is freeze distilled, kegged and then the pub uses somthing to mix the freeze distilled beer with water during dispense I think. Just noticed this too - https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/concentrated-beer-cutting-...

Re: First time making wine (damsons)

Just ordered some green bottles, corks and a corker :)

Planning on bottling soon I think.

I also got a fancy little device that auto-stops filling the bottle via a siphon.

Re: Burton Union System

Very cool project! I'm curious how much the wooden barrels of say the Marston's burton union system affect the taste of pedigree. Been a little while since I've had pedigree now. You might find this interesting - https://beerandbrewing.com/dictionary/IdBjsaZjWz/ the firestone union thing doesn't rea...

Re: Digital Refractometer

I've got an Atago PAL-1 digital refractometer I bought from fleabay. And just calibrate with distilled
water.

That aliexpress one looks very interesting esp. price wise.

Re: Natural corks in UK?

Yeah still wine corks. In batches of 100 or so.

I haven't found anywhere so far selling different grades of natural corks, such as
some overseas sites like - https://www.widgetco.com/natural-wine-corks

Natural corks in UK?

Can anyone recommend any places that sell natural corks in small
quantities, in different grades in the UK?

It sounds like there are different grades, ranging to 'flor' quality I think?

Re: First time making wine (damsons)

I'm just wondering when to remove the damsons, the wine is still at 1.050 after approx 7 days, I think I should probably leave them in till it gets closer to 1.000?

Edit : https://www.winemakingtalk.com/threads/ ... ust.15302/ kind of confirms that, they say 1.025

Re: First time making wine (damsons)

Pretty good, the blow off tube is making the water in a pan bubble around every few seconds or so. I just had a little taste, definitely alcoholic now, but with lots of sweetness left. Gonna try and swirl it more often, to impart more colour/flavour from the must. (Not exactly sure what colour damso...

Re: First time making wine (damsons)

Ah didn't know that re. clearing heh, I added 2tsp of pectolase / gal iirc. Fingers crossed it helps!

I'm preparing to do lots of transferring to different demijohns after fermentation too.

The stones can make it very bitter apparently and almond like. I think because they've
got cyanide compounds in

First time making wine (damsons)

I'm following this recipe - https://homebrewanswers.com/damson-wine-recipe/ I picked around 5kg of damsons, the OG was 1.090 with the sugar, which I assume the damsons will boost up a little. https://www.anfractuosity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/IMG_8489-scaled.jpg I just bought some demijohns to...
