Re: Been busy!

Not nice, I had one in my mash tun tap a few months ago. It makes a change from spiders setting up home in there!

My mate runs a brewery and reckons there are often slugs and snails in bales of leaf hops, so care has to be taken when dry-hopping.

Re: The Old Swan Inn pub & brewery

Nice video. 👍 It says, ‘food-grade’ hygiene works just fine for brewing beer. It’s astonishing what some naive home brewers buy into - at great cost - these days. As though they were making some ‘pharmaceutical-grade’ elixir meant to be stored in orbit for 1000 years. It’s only beer at the end of t...

Re: Are screw tops ok for wine bottling or shold I cork the lot and do the corks need soaking?

Not worth the risk of bottle bombs, commercially they can be 99.9% certain fermentation is over If a wine ferments out to 0.990, surely there won't be much left to ferment? Potassium sorbate should stop any action, if sweetened with sugar before bottling. I would think there's as much risk of bottle...

Excellent news.
Been fiddling recently, and I have come to the conclusion "any doubt replace the probe". Works like a charm.
It certainly seems to be the answer, I think I'll order a spare in case of future issues.

Re: Drop In Efficiency

Although possible, it is unlikely that crushing done by the Malt Miller would be the cause. Frequent handling of a large batch will enable grains to settle, with the top having fewer vital components. If this is so, you should find your efficiency to rise as those at the bottom come within reach. H...

Drop In Efficiency

My last few batches have seen a drop in efficiency from 72% to 67% (worked out in Beersmith) My process, equipment including hydrometer, sparge rate and water are the same. In December I made a bitter; Efficiency set at 72% Estimated pre-boil gravity - 1.046 Measured pre-boil gravity - 1.048 My last...

Re: Inkbird ITC-308S Problem(s)

I got THIS probe from ebay (I made an offer of £8.99 and it was accepted) and it looks like it's working fine now. I've got it stuck in water in the brewfridge and it's consistently reading the same as my Thermapen. I decided on the longer one so the wire join is not sitting in the liquid. Also, the...

Cheers Guy, I think you're right but nothing to lose in trying a new probe. If all else fails, I'll have a newer Inkbird and a spare probe as a back-up

Re: Inkbird ITC-308S Problem(s)

Sounds like it’s faulty. How long have you had it? Passed the 12 month warranty, knowing Sod’s Law. I’d replace the NTC probe to test it. Cheapest option. I think I've had it about 8 years, so slightly out of warranty! I guess it's not done bad, though has had issues metioned above along the way. I...

Inkbird ITC-308S Problem(s)

I've posted before about problems I've had with my Inkbird temp controller, but this time it's gone too far! I've put up with having to recalibrate it on a far too regular basis, temps jumping about all over the place etc I made a brew on Friday and tucked it away in the fridge with the Inkbird set ...
