Re: Sparkies: Electrical wiring conundrum
............ Although you say that your supply is 220/230v, it is possible that it may be much less at the point of connection (due to a million and one reasons). This could cause the current to increase. .......... Sorry, I have to take issue with that statement. The element has a fixed impedance,...

Re: Sparkies: Electrical wiring conundrum
Just btw, I am not sure if it is the same in the UK but our market is getting flooded with inferior Chinese components. This includes plugs, connectors etc. We use 15 Amp plugs with round pins in SA. Our plugs always used to have solid copper pins to connect. The Chinese plugs now have hollow pins t...

Re: Sparkies: Electrical wiring conundrum
. The 3000 w element will draw in excess of 13 Amps (depending on your mains supply voltage in the uk the declared voltage is 230v so 13.05A,realistically the uk voltage sits at 240v or more, so current consumption will be closer to 12.5A,whatever current it is 1.5mm will handle that sort of curren...

Re: Sparkies: Electrical wiring conundrum
Hi Andy I am not a sparkie but can tell you the following. The 3000 w element will draw in excess of 13 Amps (depending on your mains supply voltage). This will heat up the wire. In addition, if there is a bad connection anywhere, this would increase the heat in excess of what the wire can handle. I...

Re: Thermometer
Just wish the exchange rate was better. At x20, it becomes quite pricey for a thermometer.

Re: Thermometer
Hi all
Thanks for the feedback. I will look into the options and see what is available locally. The problem is that if the products are not supported locally and you pick up a problem (or need it calibrated) you are screwed.

Thermometer
Hi guys, I was just wondering what you use to keep an eye on temperatures. I bought 3 digital devices that are identical except for the temp readings. One is totally different from the others, as far as rate of change as well as actual temperature. It is obviously wrong so I do not use it. The other...

Re: Advice needed
Hi Guys It was our first attempt, 40 l boiler, 25 l mash tun and we aimed for a 10 l final product. We did not start with enough water, did not realise how much water is retained by the grain, did not sparge, ended up with way too little end product and topped up with water to increase volume. I am ...

Re: Advice needed
Just some feedback. Cracked our 1st brew (Erdinger clone) and........great disappointment. The beer just lacks body and really reminds me of the old cliche about the similarities between weak beer and making love in a punt. It is literally friggin close to water. The most annoying part is, I know ho...

Re: Advice needed
Second brew today and all went well. Stuck to the recipe and quantities and used a bigger fermenter. Not sure where I will put all the beer when it comes time for refrigeration but we will cross that bridge when we get there. Red Ale in the fermenter. Thank you all for the advice, really appreciated...

Re: Reverse chiller
I completed the heat exchanger this week and used it in our Red Ale brew today. Quite amazing to see how efficient it is. Brought 20 l of wort from rolling boil to 21 deg in 15 mins with tap water. Quite happy with the results.
Thanks for all the advice guys.
