Re: Scales Recommendation - 2 decimal places
Folks,
Thanks for all of the replies and the recommendations. Just one question: do these scales require calibration? Or is this a bit 'overkill' for measuring salts? Think that might have been two questions!

Re: Scales Recommendation - 2 decimal places
I am just talking a few grams - it is only for salt additions for a 23L brew. My current scales are good for grain, but not for refined accuracy needed for salt additions.
Thanks for link PeeBee.

Scales Recommendation - 2 decimal places
Folks, Does anybody have a recommendation for scales suitable for the accurate measurement of water treatment salts, so presumably, something that can measure to two decimal places. I bought an utter cheap piece of tosh which is about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike as it was warped and fai...

Re: British hops
I'm going to try Harlequin and Olicana in the near future (as recommended in the Malt Miller's latest Q & A on Youtube... I do an 'approximation' of Proper Job, which I call Improper Job - posted https://www.jimsbeerkit.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=82721 - which uses Amarillo instead of Cascade....

Re: CRS or not to CRS... That is the question!
Jocky/Eric - thank you for your replies I don’t think you need CRS with alkalinity that low, but if you can stretch to it, get a pH meter to check the pH ... Too tight for that :D but might have to suck it up! Any particular recommendation? Personally I’d bin the DWB and buy a pot each of calcium ch...

CRS or not to CRS... That is the question!
Hi Folks, There comes a point in a man's life when he thinks it is time take a hard look at his water! My analysed water report - the second time I have ordered from Murphy & Son - gives me an alkalinity as CaCO3 of 20ppm and my recent Salifert test put that reading at 17ppm. Am I correct in saying ...

Re: Stainless Hop Spider
All,
Thanks for your replies. I may try and see if it cleans up/de-clogs by throwing it in the dishy, if not, I will donate it to Steptoe and Son!

Stainless Hop Spider
Hi Folks, I bought a stainless steel hopspider - https://www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/stainless-hop-spider.html - after years of just throwing hops straight into the kettle. My initial thoughts were that this was a great piece of kit as it made the clean up a bit easier, but after today's brew, the ...

Re: Beer cost
I store all of my recipes on a spread sheet and have a 'program' which calculates the cost of each brew. I buy my base malt in bags of 25kg. In addtion to grains, hops and yeast, the spreadsheet also includes bottle caps, steriliser and water addtions, but does not include the use of electricity. Be...

McMullan wrote: Do you really need 50L to sanitise 40 bottles then another 50L to rinse, though? Probaly not, but the idea of using two buckets to sanitise the bottles is to save time. How Much Water to Brew 500ml of Ale?
I had a bit of thought during a recent brew - 23L of Old Hooky at 4.1% - as to how much water I actually use (mashing, cooling, sterilising, rinsing etc) to brew what will be 40 x 500ml of ale. Pretty shocking findings it was too! As for a bit of background, the equipment I used is a plastic boiler,...

Re: Are Campden tablets necessary?
I was once told, after a couple of years of adding nothing, that the least you should do is remove chlorine either by boiling, letting the liquor sit overnight or add a campden tablet: I tried all three methods for about a year and never noticed the slightest bit of difference so I now don't bother ...
