Re: Crown capper?

Thank you all. Here is a photo of the neck of the bottles we're using IMG_1131 1.jpg We're pretty settled on this capper (when it comes back in stock) https://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/product/bench-top-crown-capper/ Or possibly this one https://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/product/steel-bench-top-crown-ca...

Crown capper?

Having now made, bottled and test sampled our first extract brew we think our capper is a bit rubbish, the beer was lacking cabonation - not completely but no head of which to speak and not very fizzy at all. It may not be down to the capper but we had a lot of caps that didn't go on the bottle at a...

Re: Bottle conditioning question

We have plenty of bottles of beer until they're ready😉. We really want to try our best to make sure it's done it's thing and is ready before the first bottle is opened. Much as we (mainly me) enjoyed the making and we (mainly hubby) will enjoy the drinking we will not be making enough to drink solel...

Re: Bottle conditioning question

Thank you.

No, didn't use a PET☹, but if we can get hold of a 500ml fizzy drink bottle soon we shall next time. Top tip!

Think we'll put them in the shed next Tuesday for a couple of weeks, thus giving the 2+2, and maybe crack open a bottle as we do so.

Cheers👍.

Bottle conditioning question

Having bottled our Citra Pale Ale is there any way to know it's actually carbonating (without opening a bottle to see if it goes psstt)?

It's been in the bottle for 9 days now.

Thanks.

Re: Our first Extract Brew

We used DME. That's useful information about LME👍. We went for the DME as some (of either type) would be leftover and excess dried is easier to store than the liquid stuff (we vacuum packed it). I can't see us moving on from extract brewing, mainly as it's a shorter process. Whilst we're not ancient...

How much yeast for 5L batch

I shall be making 5L batches of beer and am wondering how much dried yeast I should be using. So far I've made 1 batch and used half a packet (Safale US05). All seems to have gone fine, it was bottled yesterday and the warm, flat test-taste was decent enough. Ordered up the ingredients for the next ...

Re: Our first Extract Brew

All bottled now👍. It went pretty well, except the crown capper is a bit on the cheap and not that great side. 🤞all the caps are on securely. Once we've decided if this brewing lark is here to stay we'll get a better one. We had a little taster, it was ok considering it was warm flat beer, no homebre...

Re: Our first Extract Brew

Oh, I know who it was😉😁😁.

Bottles have been washed and the beer peeked at. The yeast that was on top a few days ago has now dropped. Tomorrow it is then!

Re: Our first Extract Brew

Thanks for that Guy. It's destined for bottling on Tuesday. It might have been tomorrow but the bottles didn't make it from the shed today so the washing will need to be done tomorrow in order to be ready for sanitizing and filling on Tuesday. I'm not going to say who didn't bring them in.......but ...

Re: Our first Extract Brew

Hi Guy. Thanks for asking. It's not been plain sailing but I think it's alright. Fermentation looked to have started the next day (I peeked and saw the beginnings of some krausen) but the airlock wasn't bubbling. This was the case for a good few days so I decided to investigate further. The lid had ...

Our first Extract Brew

Today hubby and I have got our first extract brew on the go. 5L Citra Pale Ale. It took almost as long to portion the leftover ingredients and vacuum seal them as it did to brew the beer! It's in a built in cupboard in our spare bedroom, we figured this would have the most stable temperature. Onward...

Campden Tablets & Water Prep.?

Very basic question I think, but just want to clarify. I shall be starting my first extract brew this week🤞. I'm planning to to add a Campden tablet to the brewing water to get rid of the chlorine, but have a couple of questions 1) I'm making a 5L batch so will prepare 10L of water, as my tub of C.t...
