Re: Effect of mashing with too much water
Yes, but altering volume (mash thickness) can also change the ratio of minerals supplied by the liquor while those from the malt are unchanged. This might or might not be beneficial, but whatever change there might be could be incorrectly assumed by the uninitiated to be due solely to liquor volume...

Re: Effect of mashing with too much water
As mentioned on 04/07/21 I use my ancient and resurrected (though with new tap and extra kettle lead to bypass the sensitive thermostat for a long boil) Electrim bin. I like the challenge of producing good beer with such worthless equipment. The brew with which I had difficulty maintaining the mash ...

Re: Effect of mashing with too much water
The brew I did with an over diluted mash and that concerned me is now being consumed though rather slowly as it is far from my best. It has a slight aftertaste that has a trace of musty bitterness to it. I am convinced that I did nothing wrong apart from the unbalanced mash and cannot be sure that w...

Re: Help!
Jim belated thanks on this. There was no dramatic expansion in the plastic bottles so I bottled the rest and it settled immediately and turned into an exceptionally clear pleasant beer..If I knew how I would post a picture.

Re: Effect of mashing with too much water
My understanding of this subject is abysmal but I have just established that the average ph level in my water supply is 7.39

Re: Effect of mashing with too much water
@McMullan. That is a good point and suspect you are right - when you get closer to the limits it becomes more important . @Bibinimis. I have for years run a full 34 litre/4.5kg mash (no sparge) for 60 mins without issue... So either you will be OK, or I have been drinking shite for years 🤣🤣🤣 Thanks...

Re: Effect of mashing with too much water
I suspect standard mash times of 60min mask the effect of liquor:grist ratio. The shorter the mash time the more important it becomes to optimise the reaction with a combination of temperature, pH and concentrations of enzymes and substrates (the rate of collisions between enzyme and substrate). Th...

Re: Effect of mashing with too much water
I have an old Electrim boiler in which I find it difficult to mash a normal amount of grain like 4kg. This is partly because the thermostat does not seem efficient and also the new mashing bag I bought is a bigger size than the original so harder to keep in place the more weight is put in it. I rece...

Boiling adjuncts?
I am about to do a Coopers Irish Stout kit with 1kg of extra dark spray malt soft brown sugar a dash of coffee made from grounds and maybe some dark treacle. I did the kit some years ago though with just the spray malt and brown sugar which I did not boil separately but just dissolved in the FV. Thi...

Re: Dave Line & Lost Beers
I can't answer for the diastatic malt, but you are right in reducing the hop. I am about to try his McEwans Export recipe, and by my calculations, I would only need to add the amount of hops he specifies to get an approximately correct IBU figure; I can ignore the hop extract he also specifies that...

Re: Dave Line & Lost Beers
I too bought Dave Line's BBLTYB which led to some great brews. The best results were ones for which I used yeast from the residue at the bottom of a barrel of Banks's bitter (it was good until 1987 when they stopped dry hopping and brought in a brewer from Watneys!) or reprocessed yeast from Fullers...

Re: Help!
Yes I have some 1 litre plastic bottles and could fill a couple this afternoon and put in the warm immediately. I could assess the situation on Thursday and if all looks ok could bottle the rest as normal and also put inside the house which as from Friday would be unheated until 25th so hopefully th...

Re: Help!
Thanks Jim and Vacant for replies so far. I might do an unprimed bottle as an experiment but am reluctant to do it with the whole batch and if possible would prefer to reduce the imponderables.
