Re: Flaked oats and torrified wheat in extract recipes?

Sorry for the delay in replying. I have Maris otter grain! I will be doing a partial mash with it to see how it goes and will report back in due course. It would have been this weekend but there’s been a few spanners thrown into the works. It will also be a partial boil (3 US gallons). I don’t curre...

Re: Hop supplier disappointment

Ok mate thanks. I’ll make sure to avoid them.
I have dealt with John at Northwest Hop farms in Canada and found them reliable. I bought quite a few different UK varieties from them and all were superb. Great prices too.

Re: Flaked oats and torrified wheat in extract recipes?

Add 8 ozs of 2-row to the crystal and torrified wheat and steep/mash at 150f/65.6c for 30-45 minutes and you're good to go. Hi Rookie, Thanks for the reply mate but I’m not sure you’ve got the full gist (or should that be grist? lol) of the conversation. Out of interest where are you at with the gr...

Re: Flaked oats and torrified wheat in extract recipes?

Cover the pot and leave it till next morning Absolutely I would not bother putting it in the oven. Waste of time and energy. Get it to 76c for 5 mins with a clean, close fitting lid on it and come back next day. Do not open the lid, until you need plan to continue. Is this with all the grains still...

Dry hopping in active fermentation

Hi all, I came across this last night whilst doing a bit a research, I thought it might be of interest to many here. http://scottjanish.com/examination-of-studies-hopping-methods-and-concepts-for-achieving-maximum-hop-aroma-and-flavor/ The only reason I even followed the link is the fact that a few ...

Re: Flaked oats and torrified wheat in extract recipes?

Hi Guy,
Very close here I believe, after a bit of reading….1lb grain(454g):1.333 US quart 1262ml/g , which when doubled is about the same.
Although when multiplied out using that ratio for 1kg of grain it comes to 2779g water so slightly more water for the typical US ratio.

Re: Flaked oats and torrified wheat in extract recipes?

Thanks yet again Eric. I have been doing a bit of research and it seems that an overnight mash is ok. I do have one last question which I can’t seem to find anything on, instead of doing an overnight mash , what if the mash is done the night before and it’s completely done, ie the mash is completed...

Re: Flaked oats and torrified wheat in extract recipes?

Wow…I’m really surprised that leaving the mash for just a few hours longer can reduce the shelf life of the finished product…that is an eye opener! Point taken though, thank you. I do believe that the results of AG are better than using extract, absolutely without doubt , my problem is lack of time....

Re: Flaked oats and torrified wheat in extract recipes?

Thanks for that comprehensive explanation Eric, I now see the significance of your profile picture! So much to learn about. I’m thinking mini mashes are the way to go in order to get some way closer to a full mash benefit rather than just steeping. What would be a minimum length of time for a mini m...

Re: Flaked oats and torrified wheat in extract recipes?

Would Irish moss/ copper finings remove proteins released by flaked oats in a non mashed boil if they had only been steeped. I’m guessing yes.
Sorry if these are obvious questions Eric.

Re: Flaked oats and torrified wheat in extract recipes?

As you advise, neither torrified wheat or flaked oats can self-convert to sugars in the mash and therefore require enzymes from another source for that process. I suppose they might provide some minor flavours, but are likely to increase haze more than any possible advantage. Another thing Eric, wo...

Re: Flaked oats and torrified wheat in extract recipes?

Thanks Eric, I didn’t think they would do anything . Thanks for the affirmation. Waste of time and money from my point of view in a non mash brew.
Somewhat irritating from a learners point of view I’d say. ..making you think that they’re actually fulfilling a purpose.
