Re: Are we nearing the end of British Beer ?

To inject a shot of positivity into this thread, proper traditional cask from small/medium independent brewers is readily available in a number of Sheffield pubs. Sheffield Tap: Has 10 hand pulle beers of varying types (bitters, pales, IPAs, stouts, etc.), some traditional some more "crafty." I thin...

Re: New Oldie

I've done the odd Mangrove Jacks kit and was very surprised (in a good way). I would agree with Dave, fermentation temperature control makes a huge difference and I would recommend this is a priority to sort out. That being said one of the best solutions is still the old school hack of an aquarium h...

Re: serving at a party

My suggestion would be to get an adapter for your regulator that allows you to use a soda stream bottle, and take one of those. You can buy/make a clip to hang the bottle off the keg for convenience. Just becomes a "set and forget" system and you can then just enjoy the party and take the inevitably...

F*** me!

Mind you I suppose you need to have more money than sense to afford anything in that part of London anyway...

Re: CO2 set-up

Is it a sign of old age when you need a hundred words when a dozen would/should do? I don't think so, otherwise I've been an old man since my late teens... If you use John Guest connectors (like what Brew Keg Tap sell in their keg kits) then if you need to dismantle the regulator/keg/airlin...

Re: CO2 set-up

Having gone down this rabbit hole myself recently I can suggest the below: https://brewkegtap.co.uk/collections/keg-kits (just buy a keg kit and you've got everything sorted bar the CO2 bottle. Their reconditioned kegs are really good value and behave like new) The Kegland regulator works really wel...

Re: Crossmyloof retirement

Obviously I wish them well in their well-deserved retirement, but that's my primary hop source gone now... I've struggled to purchase quality hops in the last few years, and theirs were head and shoulders above just about everyone else. Throw in very good prices and they were unbeatable. Only place ...

Re: Creating a whirlpool for pellet hops.

I have to towards the end as the mesh eventually gums up with hop matter & trub.

Can't say it's had an appreciable impact on my beer, positive or negative.

Re: Creating a whirlpool for pellet hops.

No worries Top Cat, Just make sure it is a fine enough mesh bag or the hop particles will go through; you could always test this prior with a bucket of water and some spare pellets. (also I don't think hop pellets do your drains any favours; the odd bit from washing out your bag probably won't do an...

Re: Creating a whirlpool for pellet hops.

I've never managed to get the material to cone properly, and to be honest I don't bother. My immersion chiller tends to wreck this anyway... I had the same issue previously in that I couldn't use pellets in my process as they were a nightmare and clogged taps, etc. but I've found a solution out of n...

Re: Wheeler's Beer Engine

Hi ST, Graham passed on a number of years ago 😭 This is a weird quirk I've regularly observed since I started using this ~10 years ago (much to the amusement if my brewclub when I share recipes...). I don't think there's a way to correct this without modifying the software and I suspect this may hav...

Re: Who started with extract?

I started with malt extract versions of the recipes in Greg Hughes book ~10 years ago. I only moved on to AG because a lot of the recipes I wanted to brew didn't have extract options. Didn't see an appreciable change in quality but got to brew what I wanted. I do sometimes do extract recipes when ti...

Re: Abbeydale Moonshine ?

It's definitely not the beast it was ~5 years ago, and to me is a lot more watery and lacking in hop flavour/bitterness (I'm Sheffield based, so it's often readily available wherever I go) Unfortunately this does seem to be a general trend I've noticed, very few commercial beers I've sampled in the ...

Re: Batch size

23L is my default, though I will sometimes dilute down to ~25L if I've had an unexpectedly big jump in mash efficiency.

Sometimes I will do 25L and split into 2x 12.5L if I want to experiment with dry hop combos or similar.
