Re: Making gallon makers inside kettle
Just updating this - I tried out the 'vinegar/salt + battery' etch solution yesterday and it worked friggen' awesome! Got everything all marked up inside the vessel - most of the lines are even straight - and my daughter added a picture of a dog from a stencil we had lying around. Even my wife was i...

Making gallon makers inside kettle
I have a great 5-gallon stainless steel kettle with a tap, thermometer, and false bottom.
It does't have scale markings however. What's the best way to add some marks on the inside of the pot without wrecking anything?

Re: Chest freezer / cooler recommendations?
Hey flything - txs for the reply. I'm mostly brewing (well, trying to brew) lagers, so getting my temperatures under control is my first priority! This hot summer hasn't helped much. Unfortunately we don't have a bathroom tub on the ground floor (only a shower booth) and I'll be damned if I'm carryi...

Re: Help me plan a beer using these ingredients!
mysterio, that sounds great - problem, I only have a 10L pot. I doubt I'd be able to fit 9lbs (about 4kgs) of grain in there and actually have room for water. Any suggestions? Maybe just make a smaller batch? Would the recipe be something like this? Heat approx. 9L of water to about 68-69°C Put in ...

Chest freezer / cooler recommendations?
SWMBO has given me permission to buy a chest freezer or similiar apparatus for cooling during fermentation; apparently I've been a good boy lately  Only condition is that it doesn't chew up too much electricity. When it's not cooling my fermention bucket she'll probably want to use it for v...

With picture! (was: critique this recipe and newbie brew pla
So I made this recipe last night, pretty much as my instructions above. 1) Get all ingredients out and ready to measure etc. before hand: http://www.blue-eyed-samurai.com/images/beer/beer_23jan2010_01.jpg 2) Partial mash of 1kg of pilsner malt. I didn't have any binder clips, but rubber bands worked...

Re: Please critique this recipe and newbie brew plan
Actually - my bad for not being clear. Still learning how to use BeerToolsPro. But if I put in for a 6.5L boil to end up with about 4 L of final wort (after evaporation etc), with the 1Kg of crushed malt and 600g of DME, the final 4L of wort has an OG of 1.093. So that should be my target OG when I ...

Please critique this recipe and newbie brew plan
I'm a total newbie brewer; only two batches under my belt. One was a new brewer kit, other was extract & hops. I prefer lagers, so am sticking to what I like to drink. Was recommended to pick up some speciality grains to help round out the flavor profile, picked up some crushed pilsner malt not real...

1-gallon glass carboys with airlock?
Just what the title says: Anyone know where I can buy 1-gallon glass carboys with airlock? I'd like to be able to make small batches for experiements etc. I live in London, but anywhere in the UK that can ship is fine.

Re: Coopers Lager
I made the Coopers Lager as my first-ever batch from Cooper's beginner micro-brew kit . It uses brewing sugar (which, as a homebrew buddy of mine noted, is what prisoners drink), so it definitely comes out a bit sweet, and it certainly isn't a good strong lager. However - after about 12 weeks in the...

Re: FV mixture in layers - should I worry?
Hello oracle of all beer wisdom. 1) My dishwasher does not really have a 'sanitize' cycle. The hottest cycle is a prewash at 45 C, wash at 70 C, 2 cold rinses, 1 rinse at 70 C, and dry. Is that hot enough to sanitize my glass beer bottles? 2) I opened up my FV briefly yesterday to give it a stir. Th...
