what i would do is, assuming you have say 20 billion cells, Start with 500ml for 18-24 hrs then chill over night to settle, pour off liquid leaving yeast, then add 2 ltr of fresh starter for another 12 - 18 hrs. you should end up with approx 250 billion cells.
this may help

Re: Yeast starter or not ?
IPA - very interesting posts. I've a current post on the Yeast forum enquiring about trying Slopes but wanting to split the initial sample to store. Starting to get rather technical so may try your method on a standrad yeast and then, if I don't cock it up, give Slopes a try, but again, using your ...

Re: GF and grain crush
Hi all, strange day today, i conditioned my grains set my rollers at 1.0ml no more problem with bits of grain or cloudy wort, hit all my targets, "BUT" throughout the mash i had a substantial amount of foam on top, my grain bill was 3.4k MO, 210gm crystal and 100gm of black malt. any other GF users...

Re: GF and grain crush
No wheat used and it was foaming for the whole duration of mash and lots of it. had my GF for nearly 18 months now and never had foaming before.Rad wrote:Initial foaming is normal for me. Especially on wheat rich beers. It does go away after a couple of minutes of re-circulation.

Re: GF and grain crush
Hi all, a question for GF owners, bought a 3 roller malt mill and did my first crush at 1.1ml gap, all through the sparge it was just cascading down the overflow tube for the whole duration of mash, at end of sparge the top plate was about 2" above the grain bed and covered in flour, ended up very ...

Re: GF and grain crush
Have emailed supplier so hopefully will get an answer for crush size, what i can't understand is why my grain bed compacted so much to end up at least 2" below top plate on both mashes even though i cut right back on pump flow for second one, also on both, the crush and spent grains didn't look much...

Re: GF and grain crush
Thanks for replies, i thought about asking supplier about crush size and will do that, i've not used rice hulls but i know a lot of brewers do use them but i would rather get my crush right. it can only be that as i've done about 14 brews using pre crushed and never had a problem before.

Re: stuck mash ?
that's the thing, i hit my target og of 1055 and got an efficiency of 86.6%, when i started to sparge the top plate was about 2 or 3 inches off the grain bed and covered in crap, so cleaned that off, stirred up the grains a bit and sparged as normal then pumped out the wort and cleaned a load of cra...

Re: stuck mash ?
When you say overflow you mean the piece of pipe that you fit in after you push the plate down on to the grain bed. It is supposed to overflow that pipe so all is well. :) Thanks for your reply john luc, yes the overflow inlet piece, i've now done about twelve brews on my GF and never had it overfl...

I have read somewhere that never wash your glasses in a dish washer as the detergents or rinsing agents will kill the head.

Re: Whirfloc driving me crazy
My hops are put in a bag so my boiling wert is very clear, my hop filter is a six inch long copper pipe with hundreds of 2mm holes in it, I can see the whirlfloc clouds moving in on the filter and blocking it. If it is ok to have the whirfloc residue in my fermenter then I can take my hop filter ou...
