Re: Fermenting in stainless steel

I use two 30l stainless steel stockpots, each containing 19l, as fermenters for my 38l brews. I got them from a supplier in Germany 3 or 4 years ago (can't remember who). You don't need to drill holes in the lids for airlocks and seal the lid. The lids have a lip that overhangs the edge, and are hel...

Re: so what does beerline look like?

Beer line is generally either 3/8" or 5/16". You would need much higher pressures to get a decent flow rate through 3/16" tubing.

Re: WHAT TO GO FOR, BEER ENGINE, FONT, OR TAP.

I can't remember exactly, but I think they cost over £100 for the pair inc postage. I notice there's a set of 4 vintage chrome-plated taps of similar design currently listed on eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Pub-Beer-Taps-/290914360040?pt=UK_Collectables_Breweriana_SM&hash=item43bbd8dae8 . ...

Re: A question for beer engine/corny users

can i just clarify something you say you seal lid at 14 psi do you then drop the pressure or leave it and when you serve with 5 psi the extra pressure drops as you pull the first beers off I assume you are naturally carbonating not force carbonating When I seal the lid at 14 psi it is generally ano...

Re: A question for beer engine/corny users

Regards to breathers as soon as air enters the beer will start to oxidise and will need to be drunk asap. A cask breather should be connected to a CO2 supply via a regulator set at around 5psi. As beer is drawn off, it admits the same volume of CO2 to replace it, thus maintaining atmospheric pressu...

Re: WHAT TO GO FOR, BEER ENGINE, FONT, OR TAP.

Well, I threatened to, now I have! Gone are the ubiqitous swan-neck spouts on my twin Angram beer engine. In their place are a pair of traditional brass rollover taps (stainless steel lined) with the all-important on/off switch to prevent the beer in the pipe and beer engine spoiling due to exposur...

Re: Other uses for Purple line cleaner?

Drain unblocker?

Dilution rate is about 1:40, so 50ml per 2ltrs.

I you can't find a use for it, I'm sure I can. It only took me a couple of years to get through my first 5ltrs, and I'm now into my second.

Re: Antique Beer Engine Restoration - Parts Needed

I bought this G&C Dalex cask beer pump on eBay recently. http://www.victorian-breweriana.me.uk/hvb_files/vintage-beer-engine-10.jpg It too is of all-metal (ie leatherless) construction. This particular model was manufactured from the 1950s through to the late 1970s. Although externally in excellent ...

Re: Antique Beer Engine Restoration - Parts Needed

Gaskell & Chambers are now part of IMI Cornelius (UK) Ltd. The "Dalex" trademark is a reference to G&C's Dale End works in Birmingham. I bought a pair of taps similar to the ones on your beer engine from Harry Mason a few years ago to use on my twin Angram cabinet beer engine in place of the standar...

Re: BEER HAND PUMP CHECK VALVE

I used to use a cask breather, but found that the lack of internal pressure made it difficult to maintain an airtight lid seal on my cornies. When first filling I give it a blast up to 20psi to ensure that the lid is properly sealed, then keep it at around 5psi thereafter.

I've got a brass fitting on mine, although it's separated by a rubber washer from being in direct contact with the s/s. I've not had any problems with it.

Re: Best quality f/v

Is that THREE STIR PLATES?!?!?! I never envisaged needing more than one! Now I have a more like 80L brew length perhaps I'll start building the next one. 3 batches each with a different yeast Three's not excessive :D. It all boiled down to a choice of making two stir-plates for 2 x 3l conicals, or ...

Re: Best quality f/v

Does the position of the taps on your stock pots not cause them to pick up a lot of trub? No. Before I connect the line to to the cornie, I open the tap into a glass underneath to collect the first runnings that contain the yeast sediment immediately under the pipe opening, which I discard (it's on...

Re: Best quality f/v

I used to use plastic FVs, but have since graduated to two 30l S/S stockpots. Much better, and so much easier to clean. :) http://www.dadween.plus.com/images/DSC_2174.JPG Interesting. Do you use your stock pots for anything other than fermenting? Just wondering how your whole process work with them...
