Just suppose I had made a starter, would it have taken as long as this to show signs of life? I like to plan exactly when I brew and this making a starter that could take anywhere between hours and days to get going is a bother. I totally agree Eric. I exclusively use wet yeast. I couldn’t make the beers without it.

I wish yeast companies were a bit more honest about the optimal way to use their yeast. Most are produced in the USA, so by the time they’ve been shipped to the UK you don’t know how old they are or how they’ve been treated along the way. If you’re not making a starter I’d be surprised if you did see activity within 24 hours. It’s probably still growing.

Liquid yeast always needs a starter to perform well.

Cutting a hole in one of those is easy enough with a Stanley knife or sharp pointed small kitchen knife. Don’t cut in one go, draw the hole and then use the point of the knife to score around it, gradually getting deeper with each rotation. Better still is a compass cutter at least to get you starte...

Regular polyethylene has a melting point as low as 105 Celsius.

Ideally I’d find something Polypropylene. Like this: https://www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/ac ... n_Lid.html

PP is usually food safe and can get up to 130c without problems, so as an HLT they should be fine.

Weird. I’ve had a couple of those units (one a few years ago, one I bought back in May/June 2020) and didn’t observe that issue.

Although I have the on/off band at 2c and also set a compressor delay.
