Re: Proper job bottle condition yeast.

I’ve used the yeast from bottles of PJ several times, top cropped and reused and always worked great.

Does any one know the name of the yeast St. Austell use?

Cheers

Re: Problems since using a stir plate

I don’t think it’s to do with the stir plate, I’ve changed recently and still getting great results using 001, 005 and bringing on the yeast taken from bottles of Proper Job. This sounds like a problem I had ages ago and I believe I found the answer in Chris Whites ‘Yeast’ book. When do you take the...

Re: Where to stick it?

Did I start something? :D :D Thank you for everyone’s input. I still haven’t completed converting the kegs to kettles, I want to polish them before cutting holes and that needs to be done outside and the weather’s been crap. I’ve booked a week off work to get them done and guess what, it’s forecast ...

Re: ooh look another water treatment question

I’m not a fan a DWB. I’m not convinced a one product suits all works that well. Initially I had my water analysed by Murphy’s and used DWB and other salts as Murphy’s recommended but never got good results. Then, I contacted Wallybrew on here, he analysed my water. It came back different to Murphy’s...

Where to stick it?

Hi Guys, just wondering where the best place to have the PT100 probe on the HERMS? I’ve got hold of a couple of kegs and want to convert one in to a mash tun, so is it best to have the temp probe as the wort returns in to the mash tun or what if the probe was in a thermowell so it sits in the mash? ...

Re: When to scrap a stinking starter?

I capture the yeast the same way as described in the link from IPA’s post with a couple of differences. If I’ve pitched a 1 litre starter I get 2 jam jars and fill them using a SS ladle. Loose lid for 24hrs then condense into one jar and seal the lid but I take the yeast at 48hrs not 36! What I foun...

Re: Clear wort before boil - important?

I think the idea of recirculating the first runnings or ‘vorlaufing’ is to set the grainbed to make a filter and return any grain back into the mash tun so no grain gets into the boil kettle which apparently, can cause astringency. My wort was never clear when I did this just free of grain. Now I ha...

Contact Wallybrew on here and arrange to have him test your water.
He's very good, a lot of guys on here use him including myself.

Re: Keg Conditioning

might be easier to google for a priming charge calculator online ( is there one in jims tools and calculators??) then you can simply add enough sugar to condition the brew to your taste without the need of such a valve.. An Over conditioned isnt a big problem either. the solution is a few shake and...

Out of interest, what was the alkalinity of your initial water, did you reduce it for your mash liquour and sparge liquour, if so to what?

My alkalinity is 10 mg/l as CaCO3, as to the rest of your question I haven't a clue! :?

Re: When to check mash pH?

So yesterday I added all the calcium sulphate and calcium chloride with the grain to the mash.
The remaining salts were added to the mash liquor.

The result was -

Ah, yea, good point!
So does that go for calcium sulphate and calcium chloride?
