Re: What fridges are we using?

Hi, I have a Hotpoint RLA36 as mentioned above. Fits 2 cornie or 20l Sankey kegs easily. I believe the RLA34 is the same size. Bought mine nearly new on EBay for about £40. I will replace my other fridges with the same model when they eventually die! Matt Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk Hi Dig...

Re: Red x lager?

I am currently sipping on a Red X single hop IPA and I think it is a great malt. I will be buying a 25kg sack soon. Lovely, balanced and malty presence and would be nice as a lager. It would be great to know how you get on. Matt Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk Thank you for your thoughts. Woul...

Re: Liquid yeast viability.

Hello, Resurrecting this post as I have a very similar question. I have some liquid yeast manufactured in January (Imperial yeast, so theoretically they are double packs as they apparently start at 200 billion cells). I won't be able to brew with these until at least August maybe even September, so...

Re: Liquid yeast viability.

Hi Rob, I overbuilt a starter of WLP830 in January, and a 500ml jar of this has sat in the fridge until 2 days ago. Made a 1 litre starter on the stir plate, and all seems well. I will step up to 2.5 litres tomorrow, and when that is done decant 500ml into another sterile jar and back in the fridge ...

Re: Spent grain disposal - what do you do with it?

Pre lockdown I used to take the grains to someone in the village who keeps chickens, geese and goats. They all loved munching on the stuff. For the moment the grains go in the food waste or green bin. Well worth trying to spot if anyone near you keeps animals as a lot of folks will be grateful for e...

Re: Shortage of malt?

Where else can you buy 25 kg of malt for less than £30 including transport ? Almost any local brewery - who will really be feeling the pinch at the moment, and will probably have a whole load of malt/hops that they won't be brewing with in the near future because the pubs are shut. £20 on a sack of...

Re: Shortage of malt?

I usually buy my pale malt in uncrushed 25kg sacks. I have tried all my usual suppliers and they are all out of stock though I can get 5kg bags. Anyone else come across this or am I just unfortunate? Surely not panic buying! Try this at £21.77 for 25 kilos https://www.braumarkt.com/en/swaen-dutch-p...

Re: Shortage of malt?

By sheer good fortune, I currently have around 100kg of various uncrushed malt in stock as well as the hoos and yeast to make pretty much every batch I am planning this year.. Maybe we should do an isolation brew-along based on some really simple recipes that people can oull together? Covid SMaSH? M...

Re: Corny keg

I'm with Kev on this one. I like quite a few styles that are traditionally higher carbonated (Weissbier and various Belgians). I have also had the misfortune to have these at a pub where they evidently had a leak in their system and as a result I had bother a Schneider Weisse Hopfenweisse and a Kar...

Re: Using Pellets for the First Time

When I use mf GF I use the rather coarse mesh GF hop spider. Visibly allows the hot wort the circulate through much more than the finer mesh versions and I would estimate it holds back about 75% of the hop debris. I believe it is 800 micron mesh. When the transfer is finished, the filter looks a bit...

Re: Shorter, cooler dry hopping times

I’m blaming Digby and Hanglow and this thread for jumping in the car this morning and grabbing a load of Franconian (and other) beer this morning. I think I may have well got the last 4 bottles of the Spezial seasonal smoked bock in the country until next October as it’s definitely sold out at the ...

Re: Shorter, cooler dry hopping times

Don't forget to go to the Malz & Mehr shop at Weyermann in Brennerstrasse (short walk from the station) and grab some some of their very limited and hard to find beers brewed on their small in-house brewery. They are also available to enjoy at the quirky Cafe Abseits. Great beer list there! Still, t...

Re: Shorter, cooler dry hopping times

Franconia as a whole is still my favourite beer destination Annafest is worth going to, start at the top and work your way down Indeed Annafest is on the list for 2020. Had a great day at Erlanger Bergkirchweih in the summer, so another one ticked off. [emoji16] Matt Sent from my SM-G955F using Tap...

Re: Shorter, cooler dry hopping times

An interesting post Scott Janish on why dry hopping cooler and with shorter contact times may be beneficial in a few ways. Good post. I recently had to bottle a schwartz bier about 40 hours after dry hopping with saaz at 46f (8c). Were you happy with the results? I get to drink quite a lot of schwa...
