Re: Powered Dip / immersion coolers
Hi Kev, The biggest problem is that as soon as a liquid touches the coil it freezes on the surface, I have tried tonight to move the coil around abit but the thing still freezes into a tube, so I think direct cooling of the wrot is out at the moment. I did think of a large tube of metal mounted in t...

Re: Powered Dip / immersion coolers
Well theres no denying that it cools!! I guess that it could have quite a lot of potential with an FV then, but you'd need to iron out the cold-spots somehow. The way a beer cooler does things is to cool a water-bath/ice-bank with its immersion coils, and its the water from this intermediate bath t...

Re: Powered Dip / immersion coolers
Just another question, anyone know the best sort of antifreeze liquid that I could use to see how low I can get the temp to? Polypropylene glycol is food grade, alternatively a brine mixture can be used. Ethylene glycol is lethal!!! No seriously it is Fcuking lethal . . one or two (*) drips contami...

Re: Specific Heat Capacity of Water and Mixing 2 Volumes
If the SHC of both things are the same then you don't need to bother with using the actual SHC numbers. If you've got 50L at 1 degree and 25L at 100 degrees then just average the temperatures weighted by the volumes, i.e. you'll end up with ((1 x 50)+(100 x 25))/75 = 75L at 34 degrees. Thanks Naich...

Re: Specific Heat Capacity of Water and Mixing 2 Volumes
Thanks for the link, what is interesting is the relationship between the SHC of ice at 0 and water at zero (I assume due to the amount of energy needed to get between a solid and a liquid - please correct me if Im wrong). you get 2 very different results. The only other thing I need a calculation is...

Specific Heat Capacity of Water and Mixing 2 Volumes
Hi All, I want to carry out a few calculations before carring out an experiment on a few bits of refridgeration gear, as its nearly 24 years since I took a physics o level (thats GCSE to the younger ones out there :) ) could someone please check my calculation. If the specific heat capacity of water...

Re: Powered Dip / immersion coolers
Well I have just tried an experiment with the cooler this evening, I filled my 38ltr pot up with tap water 1/3 full, put the coil in and switched on, unfortunately I forgot about it for a couple of hours, when I returned I found this creation in the bottom of the pot http://i1219.photobucket.com/alb...

Re: Getting the most from temp controlled 'brew-fridge'
I did find these again not much cheaper / price difference between the ebay ones http://www.tcdirect.co.uk/deptprod.asp?deptid=220/1 Although I do quite like the look of those hop & grape ones as that would leave the FV intact with no screw threads to worry about in the FV + can be easily moved if r...

Re: Splash Guard
I think runwell steve built one from an oxo splash guard before he upgraded to a ss perforated sheet (correct me if im wrong), I think the idea was the same as most false bottoms in that it was supported on ss screws. The word oxo in th search engine brings up a few hits or try http://www.jimsbeerki...

Re: Getting the most from temp controlled 'brew-fridge'
Not sure of the sensor diameter on the ATC800 but you could use a tank connector fitted to the FV and a reducer with microbore and end cap to make a pocket for the sensor. I have this setup in my HLT. BM. What a great idea, does anyone know the diameter of the ss sensor on the ATC800+, I have one o...

Re: Getting the most from temp controlled 'brew-fridge'
Mearsuring the actual liquid:- Just one thought is there a "pocket" (like the temp gauge one) that I can use with a FV and the ATC800 to enable better measurement of temps, I fully appreciate "Dunc`s" threads on the subject of measuring the liquid & not the air temp but would like to know the best s...

Re: Few fittings questions...
For my advice for what is worth, I would get a thru deck ss fitting for the bottom outlet, cut to the required length, and if you go down the copper route all you need is a 1/2 female BSP to 15mm copper compresion fitting elbow. http://www.tradingdepot.co.uk/DEF/product/!!CFI403/15X1/2!!/D014003/Plu...

Re: Best Upgrade that you would recommend?
Thanks for all your help and advice, i`ve got a free fridge coming to me in the next week so will build a temp controlled fridge with a ATC800+ etc to start with. ((( Although I did see a walk in fridge advertised on ebay the other day, that would just about fit in a garage ,although I expect Kev is...

Re: Burco element wiring help!
I have two qmax cutters of near enough the same size. One being 1+1/2 inch = 38mm the other being 40mm. The 38mm one is just that little bit too small but if you can dremmel away to enlarge the hole it will fit. To save time and get a perfect round circle I used the 40mm qmax. If you can get a 39mm ...
