Re: Beers (late 19th Century and 20th Century)
Here's an interesting one. Looking for methods or ingredients to use in places of Ron Pattinson's "generic" (???) "caramel nnn SRM" additions and came across: https://youtu.be/_U3q4gUxW1g Obviously not molasses, but it's also obviously some peoples' interpretation of "molasses". But could such a tec...

Not much in this to help understand sugar in beer, but it does help appreciate the subject of sugar in its wider sense: History of sugar (Wikipedia)

Re: Beers (late 19th Century and 20th Century)
Oooo ... there was something I didn't include in my sugar summary above: The LAW!
Ron Pattinson covers that with: British beer legislation 1802 - 1899 (barclayperkins.blogspot.com)
That appears to exclude any UK use of sugar in beer for most of the first half of the 19th C.

Re: "No-Chill" Cubes
Have you considered the water volume changes? Have I ... ! To the Nth degree, in triplicate, etc. One of the "advantages" of being as I am; things must work out in more than one way so when I forget why I'm doing something, there's always something else to remind me "I must have had a reason for it...

"Canolwr" in Welsh ... according to Google: 'Fraid I can't speak my own language! "Middleman" in English? Otherwise, a "shopkeeper" ... apparently, the English are famous for being one of them. It is a "middleman" I attempt to be with this sugar lark. Such as 'tween Ron Pattinson's translations of h...

... I would have to pay to post on that forum [www homebrewtalk com] anyway. That is more than enough deterrent. (That's what is coming to THBF eventually - the UK forum that was bought out by an American). ... More cobblers from Peebee? Well, the "free" basic registration was all grey; greyed out?...

Re: "No-Chill" Cubes
Small detail I missed above: I'm using an adaption for "Full Boil Length Mashing" (or "No Sparge") where I truncate the mash water so the "Mash Volume Needed" doesn't exceed the "Mash Tun Volume" and put it back as "Kettle Top Up" so the estimated pre-boil volume stays as originally calculate (the "...

... (don't know if mine says 75%, there's not much left of the label) Yeap, I've had it confirmed to still be 75% ... I was just worried that it might be out-of-date as many do appear to have reduced concentration recently ... or else just removed the stuff from sale. And I'm certainly not contradi...

Re: Brupaks Phosphoric Acid
What are you trying to do? I can only guess you are trying to neutralise something reported as CaCO 3 ? Hardness? in tap water? I can say with certainty there is no, or very little, CO 3 ++ in your tap water, so be careful who you listen to. You can figure out the answer using "as CaCO 3 ", but I'm ...

A vital bit of information to keep in mind when brewing Ron Pattinson's historical recipes (by Ron Pattinson!):

Re: "No-Chill" Cubes
What follows might change following any update of "Beersmith". In the "Vols" page of the "Beersmith" recipe builder is: RoseAK1896-ferment.jpg Ignore "Top Up Water", it doesn't do anything and is probably provided for real-time recording. The "Batch Size" is the amount in the No-Chill Cubes made ear...

Re: "No-Chill" Cubes
How this looks in "Beersmith": RoseAK1896.jpg A lot of waffle to describe changing that one value ("Batch Size" near the top). One thing that does give away what I'm doing is that "Style Guide Comparison", not that I take any notice of it, and if I did it'll have done its job while designing the rec...

Re: "No-Chill" Cubes
After a month of farting about with these "no-chill" cubes trying to be able to build recipes with a predictable volume outcome using them I think I've finally a solution. The spreadsheets I was trying to use weren't working. They were driving me nuts and getting hellish complicated which just resul...

Recently made a smash with marria otter and some (homegrown) first gold. ... I bet you didn't expect a spelling lesson posting on this forum. Although it's usually me who's IPA's victim, and I have suggested I've used Maris Piper (potato) for making beer before now. You wouldn't expect your beer po...
