Re: to boil or not to boil that is the question

Yep, 1st brew and I did get some break material but obviously not as much as if I'd boiled up with the full amount of malt. If OldSpeckledBadger is about, he has a lot more info on the method as it's the one he uses :)

Re: Beer Engine

good post soupdragon it confused me too, thanks guys for advice I hope Graham doesn't think I'm complaining about the software, far from it. It's helped me no end :) I'm just a little confused. Mind you, it may be designed with full length boils in mind so my queery might not really apply. Cheers Tom

Re: Beer Engine

The volume field is the final amount of beer you want in your FV. I did think that but if the boil volume combined with the quantity of malt determines your hop extraction, how are you supposed to make accurate calculations? Or doesn't the small ammount of displacement by the malt really make that ...

Re: Wish me luck

Well done on your first extract brew. Time to start planning your second ;) As soon as one the Colne valley is down to about 10 pints I'll get some of that dried extract from work and do the same recipe to see if it's ok for brewing use. I hope it's ok, spray malt isn't the cheapest of ingredients ...

Wish me luck

Well that's my 1st extract brew in the fermenter. Did a partial boil ( OldSpeckledBadger's method ), was surprised how little foam was produced when the boil finally got going. I only used 1kg of dried malt in 10 litres with the hops, so if I've worked it out correctly ( and brewed it right ) I shou...

Beer Engine

Hi all
When working out ebu, malt quantity and hops for a partial malt extract boil, does the "volume" in beer engine refer to boil length with or without the malt in the liquor? Not sure how much displacement there is and how much effect it will have on the hop extraction.

Re: Maximum safe boil volume

Moorhouse's are a Burnley brewery and their mild, Black Cat is an outstanding brew ( won many awards ). Only ever had it from the brewery tap when visiting Burnley tho :(
I'll have to brew yours and try it for myself :)

Re: Maximum safe boil volume

Mr Badger
As a side question...........
Is your recipe for Brock's Bostin' Black Country Mild ( just searched for it ) anything like Moorhouse's Black Cat? And please don't say, yes it's dark

Yes, I've been doing tons of research. Once the penny dropped, I've found the beer engine to be most usefull :)

Re: Maximum safe boil volume

Assuming you're doing a partial boil brew 15 litres should be more than enough capacity for a 23 litre final brew length. Yes, I'm planning on following your method as best as I can. I've just about worked out how to adjust my dried malt addition to maintain the ebu called for in the recipe with Gr...

Re: Maximum safe boil volume

I suppose the best thing is to play it safe and just see how much I can get away with then top up as the boil progresses. I remember from my old brewing days that the boil can be quite foamy till things settle down
Thanks for the advice Tom

Re: First Extract Brew - Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby

Again the simplest ideas :) I have a 15 ltr bucket that I've been using to keep my dried extract and other bits in, so I could use that. I was planning to cool the stockpot in the sink. I cooled the pan I used for my small trial brew in the sink and it came down to pitching temp quite quickly but I ...

Re: First Extract Brew - Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby

Thanks for the info. I plan to boil the hops loose but my only concern is getting too much of the muck carried into the f/v as I'll be tipping through a sieve. Might have to use a hop bag with the sieve tho, what do you think? What is the largest volume you've managed to boil in your stockpot? Cheer...
