Yep, 1st brew and I did get some break material but obviously not as much as if I'd boiled up with the full amount of malt. If OldSpeckledBadger is about, he has a lot more info on the method as it's the one he uses

The volume field is the final amount of beer you want in your FV. I did think that but if the boil volume combined with the quantity of malt determines your hop extraction, how are you supposed to make accurate calculations? Or doesn't the small ammount of displacement by the malt really make that ...

Time to start planning your second ;) As soon as one the Colne valley is down to about 10 pints I'll get some of that dried extract from work and do the same recipe to see if it's ok for brewing use. Hi all
When working out ebu, malt quantity and hops for a partial malt extract boil, does the "volume" in beer engine refer to boil length with or without the malt in the liquor? Not sure how much displacement there is and how much effect it will have on the hop extraction.

Moorhouse's are a Burnley brewery and their mild, Black Cat is an outstanding brew ( won many awards ). Only ever had it from the brewery tap when visiting Burnley tho
I'll have to brew yours and try it for myself

I suppose the best thing is to play it safe and just see how much I can get away with then top up as the boil progresses. I remember from my old brewing days that the boil can be quite foamy till things settle down

Thanks for the info. I plan to boil the hops loose but my only concern is getting too much of the muck carried into the f/v as I'll be tipping through a sieve. Might have to use a hop bag with the sieve tho, what do you think? What is the largest volume you've managed to boil in your stockpot? Cheer...
