Does rape honey make good mead?

Evening all

I'm wondering if rape honey makes decent mead?

The honey is bland at best, when it does have a flavour it isn't always pleasant...

I'm going to try to get my bees onto a field of it next year, so all being well I'll have some :)

Re: No krausen!!

I'm only doing 40l batches just lost the space upstairs so bought a 60l to use in the fermenting fridge as I brew 40l at a time. Iv always sprinkled into the wort is it best to rehydrate then. Cheers OK I misunderstood, so yeast quantity isn't the issue. To add to what Orlando said, the reason as I...

Re: No krausen!!

Hi Paddy

If I'm reading you right you have almost trebled your volume but only doubled your yeast - so maybe getting off to a slower start... also sprinkling dried yeast into wort doesn't give it the best chance of success, although I appreciate you were getting decent results before.

Re: Slow cookers .....why ?

OK fair enough - hadn't thought of cooking something 'dry' in it. Though I have to say if I'm cooking ribs or a lump of meat I'll generally get my ceramic bbq fired up :)

Still think my comments are valid for 'wet' stews and the like.

Re: Slow cookers .....why ?

Yes, Maillard reactions don't happen in slow cookers... I find mine useful but best to fry any meat first to get some colour on it. Same for onions etc. Also often have to transfer liquid to a pot on the hob to reduce it. Good for an unsupervised low power consuming long cook, but if you use it star...

Re: Elvis Juice!

I think I mentioned in the other Elvis Juice thread that I previously asked at the brewery about the grapefruit content and the barman (not a brewer) told me that they made some kind of extract on their pilot kit first. The mind boggles as to what that could be - some kind of grapefruit wine? As I s...

Re: Elvis Juice!

Ended up adding another 3 grapefruits' zest to secondary. So - 6 grapefruits' zest and 2 oranges' zest altogether. ... Tastes nothing like Elvis Juice yet and I doubt I'll get the same grapefruit flavour profile as them; I just don't believe that they use zest/peel only. :) This was in a 14.5L batc...

Re: Hop bitterness calculations.

Just realised if you always brew 23L batches then you can call it
IBU = AAU * 3

I'm not sure you can make it more simple than that :)

Re: Hop bitterness calculations.

Simplifying a bit, maybe you could use this as a really rough rule of thumb assuming an average strength ale, with volume in L:

IBU = AAU * 70 / V

I'd be inclined to use charts for utilisation myself though!

Re: Hop bitterness calculations.

Palmer's how to brew suggests this: IBU = AAU * U * 75 / V Where AAU = hop AA % x hop weight in oz U = utilisation V = volume in US gallons (3.8 L) Utilisation is complicated and you need to refer to a chart of gravity and boil time to get a good number but if you brew 'normal' ales and refuse to lo...

Would you trust this fuse holder?

How about an MCB if you'll have a fixed panel?

I have a Fermentasaurus, ... https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171029/491db44fd70e0dd4a887429cce2d33cd.jpg I honestly thought I didn't need any new brewing equipment but that is a thing of beauty! Puts my bog standard flimsy Young's FVs to shame. :) It looks like a bugger to move when full though,...
