Re: Blocked manifold - cloudy beer?

I decided to use a plate chiller for the cold break and was warned that this requires a lot more atention to filtering hops and break material. I asked my wife to run up a little hop filter bag to slip over the manifold tied up with an old shoe lace.|Worked superbly well I have to say. http://i1213....

Re: Smoke On The Water

boiling: with my figures placed into the CaCO3 radial boxes. One other factor that might be pertinent is is the FLP calculation gave a residual alkalinity of 20 whereas the Adnams returned zero.

Smoke On The Water

Hi Guys, I have a question regarding the Liquour Treatment Calculator on this site. I calculated water treatment for my Adnams clone and it gave me an "initial water after carbonation reduction " (I assume this means after boiling) of 56.9. On doing the same thing for my Fullers London Porter brew i...

Re: Oh! Mr Porter what shall I do?

I had a sneeky peak at the Adnams clone today and noticed it still had clumps of yeast on the surface, is this something I should expect to see and should I skim it off before racking or not?

Re: Oh! Mr Porter what shall I do?

If I bottle a full batch, usually 23l, I always cask the brew in a budget pressure barrel after fermentation for around 10-14 days, then bottle the brew. I sometimes bottle a couple, then put the rest of the brew in a pressure barrel myself. In this case, I don't cask the brew first. Last bit confu...

Re: Oh! Mr Porter what shall I do?

Thanks Horden. One other question I have concerns casking & bottling. Graham Wheeler recommends casking for a week or two before bottling. I want to bottle 4 pints of my 25 litre brew and cask the rest. I have brewed his Adnams bitter clone so what would your advice be? He also suggests bottles do n...

Re: using pressed apple juice

I made 10 gallons this year split between 2 DJ's and 2 lots of 4 gallons each in 2 FV's First time I made cider so found the whole thing intriguing and a curious thing happened, the 2 DJ's and one batch of 4 gallons got on with it famously and once I saw the 2 DJ's coming up to finishing OG I checke...

Oh! Mr Porter what shall I do?

Hi Guys, AG#2 up next is an attempt at GW's Fuller's London Porter (page 196 in the 3rd edition). I have downloaded a trial copy of Beer Smith and so far like the look and feel of it but am experiencing a few difficulties. I have put the recipe into Beer Smith and there are discrepancies between the...

Re: Coleman vs igloo

I'm looking at the igloo too. If it doesn't hold the temp well enough, £11 for some thermal foil wrap should take care of that. I've seen 500x500 polypropylene sheets on ebay, I'm hoping they'll be suitable for a false bottom (the dimensions I've seen for the igloo are 440x440). If not, for a litt...

Re: I did the Mash (I did the Monster Mash)

I checked the og yesterday and it was sat at 1.006. I am using an airlock but the wire from the heater prevents a perfect seal so can't tell for sure whether the fermentation has completely finished but at that og suspect it is. I tasted the sample and was very pleased with it, even at this stage. M...

Re: I did the Mash (I did the Monster Mash)

Hi Frothy,

Its been in the FV for 5 days now, at what point would you check the OG. GW's recipe gives an FG of 1.006. What, if any, are the issues with kegging above that?

Re: I did the Mash (I did the Monster Mash)

Thanks Haz. Further thoughts on this have now turned to whether I go for a 2 step fermentation or leave it as you suggest. My concern is do I leave the heater in after the primary is over or take it out and/or rack off to a conditioning FV and put it in my wine cellar. This is at 11 degrees at the m...

Hi Frothy,

You mean my "water proof" thermometer designed specifically for wet environments? I do believe it might of been, perhaps when I tried taking temperatures.

Re: I did the Mash (I did the Monster Mash) update

Had a quick look this morning to check on it, everything smells OK but of course I'm inexperienced in this but think that as long as there are no "off" smells I should be about right. Krausen well formed but with a lot of dark trub and I assume yeast cells. Decided to skim as I didn't fancy this lot...

I did the Mash (I did the Monster Mash)

Well whether it will be a “graveyard smash” remains to be seen but my first AG brew is in the fermenter and it turned out to be an eye popping roller coaster ride of emotions as things went right and badly wron,g it seemed, in equal measure. I followed GW’s recipe for Adnams Bitter clone (my f...
