Grain Storage. Freezing?

Post by Reg » Fri Apr 21, 2006 10:18 pm

Light not a good thing I know... Damp not wholly a good thing either... A bit of an odd question. If you were buying in bulk, could they go in your chest freezer or would thid b*gger things enzymatically?

I reckon crushed it keeps for months if you store double bagged in a cool dark place. The crushed malt from H&G had a 6 month lifespan on the label.

As for freezing, its not recommended but some people do it. I reckon it'd be ok if you can make sure it is airtight so moisture cannot get in.

I've just bought some Brupaks crushed pale malt this week & also some Youngs crushed crystal malt. Both have best before dates of end of December 06 on them. That's 7 months from when I bought them.

Usually most things won't spontaniously combust when they reach their end of shelf life date, so I'd be more than happy to use them 2 or 3 months after their end date. As long as they have been stored correctly in a cool dark place.

i've heard of people on the northern brewer forums storing whole grain in cornies under co2 to keep it fresh, but i can think of better things to keep in my kegs!
