Gotland Birch Smoked Malt

Post by Lugsy » Wed Nov 14, 2012 6:58 pm

Has anyone used this yet? I've just bought a couple of kilos from The Malt Miller in an attempt to up the smokiness in my smoked Dunkelweizen. My last brew used 2kg of Rauchmalt and 3kg of Weyermann oak smoked wheat malt, it was pretty smoky but still not enough to satisfy my needs. I've heard that the Gotland malt is stronger than the Rauchmalt so I'll be using that and the oak smoked wheat in my next one but I was wondering if anyone had any experience of it before I blindly leap in! If this go doesn't hit the spot then I suppose I'll have to try smoking my own and see how that goes.

Cheers :D

I have used the smoked Gotland malt to make Gotlandsdricka mainly because my wife's family are from Gotland. It is generally drunk young and the dricka brewed on Gotland is a drink of legendary qualities. When I brewed it here I persuaded my mother-in-law to put 10kgs in her luggage so I am amazed Malt Miller now have it in stock. The malt is very pungent and in Gotland is the only grain in the malt bill, that is apart from an equal volume of fresh juniper twigs in the mash tun. Even at 1% of the mash it will impart its flavor. When I entered it into the 2007 CBA competition the judges were totally perplexed, described it as unbalanced. Today it would probably be described as revolutionary. The malt is well worth the effort as it has a great smoky quality that is difficult to match, and does not diminish with age. It swamps any hop notes and would benefit from a decent amount of bitterness to balance out the malt and is the perfect accompaniment to smoked lamb http://www.gotland.info/language/eng/go ... ulla01.php

Not that this helps, but I'm bottling my Big Malty Smoke Beer this weekend, it had 500g of the Gotland in it.

I am going to have to try and track down a smoked beer, see if like it. It sounds interesting, :)

Zymo - I'd love to brew a Gotlandsdricka, it sounds superb! Maybe when I can find a juniper bush I'll give it a go. I think Rob was pretty amazed when he got hold of a couple of sacks of it too and I can't wait to try it in my next smoked Dunkelweizen.

pdtnc - I missed that you'd used some in your Big Malty Smoke Beer, I guess you'll be sampling a little on bottling day? Let us know how it tastes!

barney - Have you tried any of the Schlenkerla Rauchbiers? The Marzen is probably the smokiest but I prefer the Weizen. PM me if you can't find one, I'll see what I can do for you
