Stocking up
I just placed an order for a 25 kg bag of Crisp # 19 floor malted maris otter and I expect a delivery of some specialty grains, hops, and extract tomorrow. I have a few more kgs of grains and one of hops to order and I'll be set until approximately may 2026.
I'm just here for the beer.
Re: Stocking up
Four years is a long time, but if stored sealed in coolish, dry, dark conditions, both malted barley and hops should remain good enough to make a decent beer. I used some pre-pandemic grains and hops recently without any issues in the finished beers.

Re: Stocking up
Odd. I make it 17 months, not 4 years!

Re: Stocking up
Just arithmetic. December 2024 to May 2026 is about 17 months.
Where did you get 4 years from?

Guy. Crossed wires here I think. How long ago was the pandemic?

Re: Stocking up
Guy, nallum posted that he recently used some supplies purchased pre pandemic. That is where the reference to four years refers
Beer is my drug of choice.
I don't need anger management classes, I need people to stop pissing me off.

Re: Stocking up
That's partially why I'm stocking up that far ahead. Hopefully British ingredients won't be tariffed.

Re: Stocking up
I think a 25% tariff is expected across the board. Prices on imports are likely to increase further due to less supply and ‘opportunity’. If comparable tariffs get reciprocated, which is the most likely response, it’s going to increase the already relatively high price of American hops in Europe. American IPAs might get too expensive to brew in Europe.

You could sub some of the newer British hops that are similar to American hops.nallum wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2024 8:18 amI think a 25% tariff is expected across the board. And what's wrong with brewing British IPA? I brew mire of them.

Re: Stocking up
My IPAs are usually English in terms of style, tbh. Even when I use American hops, which I do occasionally. I have some Citra cryo to use up this weekend, in fact, but it's going to be an 'English IPA' in all other respects, including hopping rate. Just waiting to harvest the yeast (Harvey's) to repitch fresh, batch to batch. I was thinking more about the likely effects on craft brewing in Europe, which is hugely influenced by American hops generally. I think even the American hop varieties grown in Europe are going to get a lot more expensive. I'm expecting to see some big changes in beer brewed in Europe. I noticed some successful craft breweries in the UK turning to traditional cask English ales already, after the first 'four years of uncertainty'. They clearly have their business heads screwed on. But let's be honest, the next 4 years is going to have all kinds of undesirable consequences that weren't ever considered or even considered possible. Individuals like Elon Musk make my flesh crawl.

Actually they were and people were told. And none of the maga dummies believed it.
And yes, musk is a bag of crap.
