Malting barley price rise

Post by Scooby » Mon Jan 15, 2007 3:37 pm

Expect to see about a 20% rise in the price of pale malt  Due to the worldwide demand for bio fuels many farmers are selling to this market, it's easier to grow than malting barley because if they get the nitrogen % wrong it's animal feed

So get stocked up  and expect to see the price of a pint at the local go up :(

:-({|= Well, that's cheered me up no end, thanks Scooby.

I see that The Office for National Statistics has just launched an online Personal Inflation Calculator to allow you to, errm, work out your own personal inflation rate.

I bought two 25 kilo sacks of M. Otter the day before yesterday. For once it looks as if I timed things just right.

John at H&G reckons Pale will rise 5-10%, which isn't too bad, but German malt will go up as much as 45%, oh dear, all to do with the rubbish harvest.

Expect, new and improved recipie's from all the big brewers, come late spring early summer

For the micro brewery's it must be of concern, as in some locations it will push their draught prices towards £3,50 a pint, which may put of customers. On the flip side it costs £4,50 for a glass of red vinager in pubs in London, so it does put things in perspective.

Its also worth noting that if memory serves UK VAT is charged on the extra price increase, so the exchequer is a winner

It's charged on the beer, but not on the malt.

Our malt prices have risen about 10% at the commercial level too. It's hard to pass this on. Many breweries are waiting for the budget and then look out.

Be nice if we could sell grain for more than the cost of production for once :)
As grain is still dirt cheap the next biggest cost for the Malt houses is fuel i.e. hauliage, turning, roasting, boiling etc.
