Wheat Malt or Flaked Barley

Post by Belto » Fri May 18, 2007 5:12 pm

Getting excited about my brewday tomorrow.Trying out my insulated mash tun
Tubby Shaw gave me a great recipe for a strong hoppy bitter.
It was gorgeous and all my new friends agreed.
I want to increase the brew length by 35%.
Do I increase all other ingredients by the same %?
It calls for 500grm Torrified Wheat but I only have 400grms.
Can I add Wheat Malt or Flaked barley to top up.
Which would be the best and what possible effects can It have upon the Brew :?

I'd add the malted wheat, but then it is my favourite adjunct!

Wheeler states that malted wheat has a more pronounced flavour that unmalted. :-k I've never used the other forms so can't speak from experience. Flaked barley is suppose to add a grainy flavour - would this suit you or are you looking for more spicy wheat flavour? One is not better than the other, just different.

Yes, keep everything in proportion.

Hi Belto :D
Good luck with the brew tomorrow.
Yes just up all the ingredients by 35% and add the wheat malt, it is a different flavour to unmalted wheat, but it is a pleasant one
I'll look forward to reading about your adventures with your new kit when I return from my holiday in the beer wilderness

Plan ahead they say.
Well I did'nt. I increased Tubby's recipe by 35% and could'nt get it into my new mash tun (Modified insulated coolbox)so I had to reduce the grain to less than the recipe suggested. Here we go one of the brew days when everthing goes wrong.
Set up the mash tun temp ok @ 66c covered with towels etc when I returned 90 mins later the temp had dropped by 1-2C.
That was good, started to sparge and reduced runnings to 1.010
total quantity was too much for my standard Burco boiler and so had to boil in two batches.
Lucky I had intentions of increasing my brew length and had bought a 60ltr FV so I cooled it in two batches and mixed the results, added yeast starter(Gervins nice solid sediment)
Onto the heat mat with news paper on top of mat to reduce the heat(Thanks to SteveD)
Currently a nice rocky white fermentation underway at a steady 20-21C
Oh I added a fish tank sticky thermomenter to outside of FV a good visual on what's happening. Now to sit back and wait hoping things turnout O'K
Will have to finish Garth's clone of CFC and consider my boiling capacity
