Just been looking through t'internet, as you do, any looked at a site and found this:
http://www.warminster-malt.co.uk/marisotter.php
Look at the bottom right of the page and read the reports ..... interesting stuff.
Warminster Malt Company - 2012 Maris Otter
Re: Warminster Malt Company - 2012 Maris Otter
It's a good read, makes you realise where our brews start life and the detail that's already gone into the ingredients before we get our mitts on them
I'm still not sure after reading the reports if we're in for a good harvest of Marris Otter or not though! Seems like a fingers crossed and hope for the best situation.

Re: Warminster Malt Company - 2012 Maris Otter
Hi!
Not a promising situation as the last report was in July. I know Barley growers in East Yorkshire have had a poor season due to flooding and then dry spells. They also have not had the ideal 100 days of sun that they need for really good yeilds (and big fat grains).
I know for a fact that the Isle of Man Harvest is going to be sodl on the market as cattle feed this season, it won't be going to the maltings...
It seems the whole picture is patchy as some growers will do ok and others are looking at silos full of expensive cattle feed...
So much for the drought the growers in the SE were worried about in Spring!
Expect some price increases in grain and malt products in the comming months...

when down at adnams brewery in suffolk a few weeks ago, their brewer announced that it had been a very good barley year, that part of the country provides most of the stuff, so dont be too alarmed, of course its always a bad year when you're trying to fix a price!

Maybe this is not of any interest to you homebrewers in UK, but 2012 was very good year here in continental Europe. We don't grow Maris Otter, Optic or any of your traditional varieties, but for largest brewers the variety doesn't make any difference, only extract yield, protein content and few other things like viscosity, glucans or smm level. In case of any shortage, the maltsters will just import barley from France, Germany, Austria or Poland. I think prices will be competitive.
Re: Warminster Malt Company - 2012 Maris Otter
I too heard it was a good year for barley growing in Europe.
Many eastern parts of the UK were able to get a respectable harvest before the recent high wind and rains.
Sadly thats not the case everywhere and certainly not in the far west of the UK.
Lets hope that this doesnt affect the price of UK varieties of malt.
I'm sure you are right about the fact that they will say " oh it was a tough year" when we start to talk about price...
I've also heard it said that commodity traders are adding upward pressure on grain prices in general...
