Post by Walrus81 » Sun Jun 09, 2019 4:06 pm

I have 25Kg of crushed MO.

currently sitting in the sack it came in. Any suhgestions as to what to use to keep it fresh and sealed.

I was thunkig of the really useful boxes but am not sure if they are suitable (food grade).

Any other suggestions?

How about measuring it out into 5kg amounts then storing it in plastic bags with a clip on them to keep it fresh?

Nowadays I buy the 5x5kg pre-weighed crushed malt from The Malt Miller. Costs £3 extra but saves getting malt dust everywhere and you know it'll stay fresh until the bag is opened.

Thtat is a good idea ideas as the boxes then would not need to be food safe.

If you put the grain in bags you won't even need the really useful boxes. Bags of grain are more bendy than boxes, so take up less room!

feed bin from an agricultural place or chutney barrel are good options (around 80L). Tbh though i use cable tied sacks at the brewery, the sacks are relatively waterproof and hard wearing so unless you’re getting probs with mice or slugs I wouldn’t worry too much..

Depends how quickly you'll be using it. If you brew every couple of weeks and use 4-5kg grain each time, then you won't have a problem. The crushed grain should be fine for 3 months or so.

If you brew if you brew much less frequently then you need to be sure you're keeping it somewhere it can't get damp or, as RWA says, get eaten by slugs or mice!

I find it easier to have it in 5kg bags for when I come to set up for a brew day. I don't have to weigh the grain out from a sack and worry if the husks and flour are properly mixed. I shake the bag around and if, for example, I want just 4kg of pale malt, I only have to weigh 1kg from the bag. The 1kg goes into a new bag and is labelled with the weight.

Ive been keeping my grain in a food grade plasyic barrell.
Found the 60l version fits 25kg sack perfectly.

Dump the bag in, cut the top open and dont have to keep taling it in or out.

Think this is the one i use....

Brew using about 5kg a month and never had any issues.

I then also have a couple of 30l ones for speciality grains and sealed hops.
