I normally buy most of my grains from Rob, the Malt Miller. In the past I have ordered smoked malts from Rob, which arrive in good condition & smell wonderful upon opening.
Recently I placed an order with BeerHawk for a few beers & took advantage of their 5kg bag of Weyermann Rauch Malt, went to brew with it over the weekend, upon opening the bag = no aroma, taste test = tastes like a standard pale malt.
Have I been sold a dud / old bag from BeerHawk?
Cheers

Re: Smoked Malts
I have 5kg of Weyermann Rauch Malt in my stocks and you only only have to crack the lid of the container to release the smokey loveliness.
I suspect you may indeed have been sent the wrong grain.

Re: Smoked Malts
Yep probably is a duck, have this afternoon / evening sent the grain back.
That's normally my impression of home smoked grain & the commercial stuff Rob has sold me in the past, the aroma is the first thing to hit you.
BH before offering the return even suggested I brewed with the malt to see what the outcome was, like I was crazy enough to spend half a day + brewing ingredients on a whim.
Another interesting thing about their labels, no best before date.

Re: Smoked Malts
On a side note, is Viking Malt available in the UK? Try their smoked malts.

Re: Smoked Malts
Out of interest, are you going to make a 100% smoked malt, rauchbier?
I really want to try making one some time, as I love Schlenkerla.
