Great western brumalt
I recently acquired some g w brumalt to use and comment on.
The plan is a pale mild/ordinary bitter type of beer to showcase it.
Two gallons 1.040 give or take
1.5 pounds golden light dme
8 ozs maris otter malt
6-8 ozs brumalt
maybe a touch of victory malt and/or flaked oats
18-20 IBUs EKG
S-189

Why so little brumalt? If you're testing it shouldn't you use loads more?

Re: Great western brumalt
The guy I got the brumalt from reccomended 10% or so and by my calculations 10% of what I'm using, in an all-grain version, would be 5.5 ounces. I've read posts saying it's easy to overdo it with this type of malt.guypettigrew wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 8:10 pmWhy so little brumalt? If you're testing it shouldn't you use loads more?

I brewed yesterday and definitely tasted a bit of sweetness in the hydrometer sample from the brumalt.

I took a gravity reading after eight days: 1.040-1.009. Nice body and gentle sweetness from the brumalt.

Re: Great western brumalt
I used
2 lbs golden light dme
8.5 ozs maris otter
6 ozs brumalt
1 oz victory
1 oz pale chocolate
.25 oz EKG
1 pack S-189
1.040-1.009
At some point I want to up the victory and pale chocolate to 4 ozs each for a dark mild.

Re: Great western brumalt
The description of brumalt by Great Western includes tart which I didn't get in the pale mild. I am getting a bit of tartness in the darker version in which I used 33% more.

By the end of the batch the slight tartness faded.

Just in one as a way to keep tabs on how carbonation is progressing.

@Rookie, ok... I got a little excited at the thought of cheap plastic bottles. I have never use Pet bottles at all.

You can use them as long as you keep them in the dark to avoiding skunking.
