Obtaining barley seeds suitable for malting

Post by chris2012 » Mon May 04, 2020 9:02 am

Hi,

Does anyone know anywhere online that sells small quantities
of barley suitable for malting, with specific varieties?

From my limited searching it seems very hard to find anywhere that sells
in small quantities and gives a price.

Cheers

I couldn't find any there alas. I eventually managed to grab some and have planted a very small amount
just to watch it grow heh, it's just now started sprouting.

Will try my hand at malting a small amount too.

I couple of years back I planted a 3m x 6m strip of barley, it grew quite well. APITA to thrash though at harvest time.

Oooh very nice! Roughly how much barley did you get in weight after cutting it?

You malted it too then?

I got about twice as much as I planted, mainly down to the fact the wind got hold of it before I had chance to harvest & a lot was lost.

I still have the saved seed with the intention to grow it again.

The seed I got was from a good source & a well known brewing barley, I cant remember the name though.

However if you can get a bit of pigeon barley feed (from ebay), that sprouts very well, so if you want to experiment with malting buy some of that. I've used pigeon feed when making home roasted barley.

There is also quite a good video on you tube from a fellow brewer.
