Im was wondering what sort of taste does challenger give and would first gold be a decent substitute for it?

Personally, I've found Challenger to have quite a rounded fruity flavour and aroma whereas First Gold has a bit more of a flowery, citrus fruit character (more like a Golding).

I'm intending to use Challenger in a stout for Christmas in the next few days as that fruitiness would be good for a Christmas brew. I may even add some First Gold too (as I've got some left in the freezer!) and I think the two would complement each other well.

The traditional substitutions for Challenger are Northern Brewer and Perle :)

This is for a planned kwak clone, im putting an order in with H&G anyway so i'll go for the challenger, which is what the recipe calls for, the fruitness of challenger would suit much better than citrus flavours for sure.
Cheers for the replies guys :D
