Thinking of making another Lager style beer and looking to try using Saaz and Cascade hops for the first wort hop boil.
What do you think.....I know it wont give the cascade flavour, I just really want it to increase the IBU without using my whole stash of Saaz.
I would be thinking this:
15g Cascade
60g Saaz
IBU = 34
Will be doing a Decoction Mash as I can never hit the correct temprature by just adding boiling water. So a Decoction Mash seems to work well for me.
Saaz & Cascade boil hops?
Re: Saaz & Cascade boil hops?
Here's what I was thinking:
2.00 kg Pilsner (2 Row) Ger (2.0 SRM) Grain 44.0 %
1.50 kg Pale Malt (2 Row) UK (3.0 SRM) Grain 33.0 %
0.60 kg Corn, Flaked (1.3 SRM) Grain 13.2 % (yes I know!)
60.00 gm Saaz [3.20%] (90 min) Hops 22.0 IBU
15.00 gm Cascade [7.60%] (90 min) (First Wort Hop) Hops 12.9 IBU
40.00 gm Saaz [3.20%] (10 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops -
0.45 kg Invert Sugar (0.0 SRM) Sugar 9.9 % (yes I know!)
2 Pkgs Nottingham (Danstar #-) Yeast-Ale

Re: Saaz & Cascade boil hops?
Looks like a nice cream ale, here's hoping we get an Indian summer in September for you to enjoy it.
I would drop the IBUs right down though. That light a beer, especially with the drying effect of the sugar will be overwhelmed. It doesn't have the malt to support it. 20 IBUs would be more than enough, even 15 - 18 IBU. Never thought i'd say this but i'd even tone down the finishing hops. I made a light cream ale with heavy hop flavour once and it was just odd.

Re: Saaz & Cascade boil hops?
Thanks mysterio I'll take that on board. Was kinda looking to make a Pilsner style lager, but using Nottingham yeast....had a good result recently with my last brew using this yeast at a low temp.
Re: Saaz & Cascade boil hops?
Yeah i`d also drop the IBU`s
When a brew the wifes lager i aways keep them around the 20 mark and they seem to be just right.
