Northern Brewer Partner?

Post by JayBee » Thu Apr 15, 2010 8:19 pm

I`m looking to get an extract bitter going in a few days and have decided to use up some northern brewer for bittering. I`m a bit short of choice of a match for them and have got fuggles, challenger and styrians left before I get my next order in. I`m leaning towads challenger for aroma but wondered if anyone had any opinions or suggestions.
I shall be going with Windsor and bottling and I`m looking for a summer quaffer around 4%abv if that helps.

Hi JB

It's a couple of weeks since your post. What did you go with in the end?

I have just brewed an oatmeal stout today with 1 oz Northern brewer and 1/2 oz fuggles on the boil and 1/2 oz fuggles on the late addition. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

I'm drinking a pale ale at the moment with Northern brewer used for bittering and cascade for flavour and aroma additions. I think it's probably the best extract brew I've done. They go really well together.

I didn`t in the end, I left them in the freezer for another day. I`ve only used them once in a speckled Hen style recipe which turned out to be my most dissapointing effort so far, the one with Golden Syrup in, not good.
Interesting match up with the Cascade though, not a pairing that springs to mind. I used Cascade for bittering in a red ale with Goldings which has been my best effort so far, I never thought of using a high alpha hop for aroma before.
I like the idea though and as I like to make small extract batches I might try the combination some time.
Cheers.
