Hop Bugs aplently! (with BIG pics)

Post by Chard » Mon Jun 28, 2010 10:40 pm

ok ive been tending my hops fairly well so far, giving them plenty of water and plant food. But it seems that the plants are now becoming food for others in return... infact they have their own little ecosystem!

I took some pics and did some research but im still puzzled by some - observe!

A- is for Aphid... i think. can anyone confirm?
Image

B - Ladybird EGGS! YAAY!
Image

C - eggs hatch into ladybird larvae. after taking this photo the larvae munched that aphid good!
Image

D- i have no idea what these are... any help?

I've just started to notice the Aphids (which seem to turn red when they are sucking on hops) I've had the odd furry Hop Caterpillar but I've left those to it :)

Those are definitely aphids (A). I wish I had ladybird eggs on mine!

I wouldn't worry too much about the bugs. Try washing them off - use a pair of marigolds if you're squeamish (or you just like the look ), just the act of brushing them usually squishes tons at a time. I'm pretty lucky in that between the birds, frogs, wasps, spiders and ladybirds most of the potential bug\pest plagues are held in check in my garden (and down my allotment too for that matter). But if you're being overrun, you could use some organic pest control techniques there's ton's of advice on the internet. Good luck.

Yep - a drop of washing up liquid mixed with water and spray it on

Never had any problem with aphids on my hops but on strawberry plants thats a different matter, have stopped trying to grow them as they would be absolutely crwling with them and they seemed to carry some disease that killed the plants off.
