Thanks guys
when do I harvest my hops
Re: when do I harvest my hops
I got my hops in last sunday there were a few starting to tinge brown they and were springy, ie squeeze them and the bounce back.
Mine are fuggle and EKG though but should not imagine there is much difference.

What do you do with the hop cones when you have picked them?
Dry them out for a period of time?

Re: when do I harvest my hops
Thanks prolix, a few of my larger cones have a slight brown tinge at the base, I will give them a gentle squeeze and see if they bounce back, I don't think there will be enough for a brew but I may get enough for dry hopping. I should get a better crop next year as it is the plants first year, my first gold was doing great til the aphids destroyed it and my hallertau has no cones on it at all mind you the top of the bine got sapped off during replanting, I will cut them back and bury the last 2 feet or so to encourage more growth next year.prolix wrote:I got my hops in last sunday there were a few starting to tinge brown they and were springy, ie squeeze them and the bounce back.

Re: when do I harvest my hops
I've just harvested for the first time, my understanding is to dry in a warm place( out of direct sun) for up to two weeks then use or freeze them, anyone know more on this/
no palate, no patience.

Mine are spread out on bin liners in the loft. I have dried mine in this way for the last 5 years with great success. I'm in Berkshire and mine were ready around 7th September. I was in Cornwall last week and the ones down there looked like they were a week or so behind.
5 years back I did a brew with some of my green hops. It was really amazingly intense. I then did my calculations and used the equivalent IBU of dried hops a few months later. It was pretty much the same so I suspect you could just freeze the hops.
