Frozen and thawed hops - any good?
Frozen and thawed hops - any good?
I bought a vac-packed package of Northern Brewer hops back in (i think) March this year and used perhaps a third of the block in a stout, freezing the rest for later use. Whilst the stout turned out very tasty, i didn't get the chance to use the hops due to new baby, etc - i presumed they would be okay, albeit with a reduction in potency, until i had the chance to brew again. Unfortunately we had to move house unexpectedly recently and in the ensuing thawing and clearing out of the freezer the hops were moved to the fridge, where they remain. Assuming they're not moldy, or something, what are the chances of them being any good now? They've been thawed and refrigerated for about 2 weeks now...

Whilst I don't know for certain I think they're very likely to be okay. Hops are fairly resistant to nasties and they'll have been pretty dry when you put them in the freezer so wouldn't really have frozen as such, so the fridge shouldn't be hugely different. I've kept hops that long in the fridge before too - they were fine, though I suspect they may have lost a little aroma.

exactly, if they smell like something else that you wouldn't put in a brew, don't use them.boingy wrote:Give 'em a sniff and that will be your answer!
