Homegrown Hop Database

Post by Chard » Tue Apr 05, 2011 1:14 pm

Fancy being able to identify wild hop varieties? me too! i'd love a catalogue of sorts to look through at leaf structure, stem colour and cone appearence etc to try and narrow it down at least.

for that reason i'm asking all you hop growers to take some pics of your hops this year!

send the pics and the name of the variety to hopsmad @gmail.com (without the space of course, just typed it like this to stop junk mail a bit) or you can just post em on here and ill keep checking!

ill compile a little database and see if it works.

Happy hopping

Some people started this same idea on the Australian forums earlier this year: http://www.aussiehomebrewer.com/forum/i ... rticle=138
However, it's my suspicion that - like the hop-cone-properties - even the leaves and shapes of the cones/plants can depend on where it's grown and how/who/where it was obtained from, making such a general database interesting but not as useful as it might be.

What a fantastic idea, I would love to know what the hop is I acquired from the hedgerow a couple of weeks ago. I think you should also add the roughness of the bine (maybe on a scale of 1-5) as this might help determine the variety. Will sort out pics of mine (Target, Bram X, and Fuggles) this weekend and post or email.

Glad to see some interest!

im not guaranteeing it will work but who knows!

would also be a good way of knowing whos growing what and maybe developing a hop swap shop!

Instead of a 'hop swap shop', creating a database of what hops each home brewer grows (such as a Hop Plant Register) might facilitate swapping and exchange between individuals, since 'sales' and a 'shop' might have other implications.
