This is one of those occassions when I wish I'd searched the forum in depth first! Oh well....
Anyway, I've just completed my latest AG brew. This consisted of Pale and a little wheat malt, and used Brewlabs F40 yeast. The hopping was Challenger for bittering, EKG at 15 & 5mins, and 20g Bobek 30min steep at 80c with another 20g dry hopped for a week in secondary. Out of the FV when bottling I noticed the 'soapy' flavour that has been commented on by many previously. My question is whether this is something I'm stuck with, or will it dissipate somewhat with time. I usually condition for at least 4 weeks before drinking (often longer).
Bobek (Again!)
Re: Bobek (Again!)
Hi Richard
If it's any help I used Bobek instead of Styrian Goldings in two recipes and noticed a soapy taste but thankfully there is no evidence of it in the finished beer.

Re: Bobek (Again!)
Cheers there swiller; I've now got 60g of Bobek left and, whilst I don't want to dump them, I can't be doing with that effect again. Well, we'll see what we get in 4 - 6 weeks time. If I remember I'll leave a note of the outcome I get.
Re: Bobek (Again!)
So after 4 weeks I tried the first bottle, and... no, no. On so many levels, no. It's that Bobek; I just don't like it. The beers otherwise perfectly drinkable and it will get drunk, but, no.... It may have been better if I'd used a lot less, but it's an experiment I shan't be repeating.
Re: Bobek (Again!)
Strange how tastes differ.
I kegged a brew yesterday, challanger for bittering and bobek for flavour/aroma.
I had a little taster and I've been back sampling a couple of times since, Love it.

Absolutely spud, tastes differ. Anyway, I've now got 60g of Bobek if anyone wants them
. Strictly collection only (seriously, if you're near Halesowen and want them, you're welcome). I'll do this particular brew again, but I'll have some Saaz left over after a wheat beer, and I'm thinking of using them for flavour/aroma instead.
