Sorachi Ace as bittering hop

Post by MikeMarcus » Wed May 04, 2011 11:18 pm

Has anybody used Sorachi as a bittering hop? Is it soft or harsh? Does the (extremely odd) flavor survive a 90 minute boil or would it mellow into something more palatable?

It would be nice to retain a subtle hint of the dill and lemongrass flavors without my beer tasting like fairy liquid.

brew dog did a 100% SA beer so they obviously used it for bittering.
Beer tasted ok - no nasty flavours.

SA is certainly a unique taste though.

I have drank a number of Sorachi beers including the brewdog one, my question was whether anyone has experienced it as a bittering only addition.

My experience of Sorachi is that once the novelty has worn off, it tastes like crap (obviously subjective I know but fairy liquid and dill...blerghh). Apparently it might be a great bittering only hop but I'm not wasting a batch to find out.

I'd have thought that there are cheaper bittering hops. I've not used Sorachi successfully in a single hop brew (it got infected) but I have used it in combination with Citra and it worked perfectly ok.

Hope this helps

I've done two all Sorachi pale ales and both were great imo (although the flavor can seem kind of sickly after a while). I don't remember anything in particular about the quality of the bitterness.

ps I'd like to say that I had to google "fairy liquid" to make sure that it wasn't a euphemism for something unwholesome :)
