Weighing down with metal bolts

Post by staplefordbill » Sun May 22, 2011 10:09 pm

I have a muslin bag which I'm going to use with dry hopping. A Yankee book suggests sterilising the bag first, and weighing down the bag with metal bolts. Is sterilising necessary, and would using metal bolts leave a metallic taste? (I have some unused 10cm M10 bolts which I guess are stainless steel.)

If they are stainless steel I would say they are OK. If they are not I would prefer to use something like glass marbles or a paper weight. Stainless bolts are not common place unless you have got them for a special purpose.

I use those pebbles that you place in glass vases to be artistic. A bag for £1. They are polished and easily sanitised with everything else. A handfull is heavy enough to weigh down the muslin bag full of Hops.
I buy from The Malt Miller

Stainless bolts would be fine, however I'd suggest that the thread would make them harder to clean, if doing something similar I'd use glass-marbles or something similar that are round, easy to clean and can be heat-sanitized.

I boil my hop bags in a saucepan along with the marbles, it seems the easiest way to make sure they are clean.

Make sure they are stainless, and not just nickel plated. Stainless are usually marked 'A2' on the head.

Bought a £1 bag of decorative pebbles from Wilkos so I'm all set. I'll boil the bag and pebbles together. :D
