generic hopping schedule requested
So i have decided for my next few brews to make a set of pale ales each with a single hop. I have just purchased 100g each of cascade, citra, nelson sauvin, bramling cross and appollo.
My idea is to make the same beer each time only changing the hops, so I can really see what each one is like in my brews.
What would you advise as a good genral schedule to use the full 100gs.
25g 60 minutes
25g 10 minutes
25g 0 minutes
25g 80deg
or maybe a bit of dry hopping.
What would you do ? different quantaties at different times ?
Cheers.

Re: generic hopping schedule requested
Your schedule is fine, but depends how bitter you like your beer.
Fine in those amounts for Bramling X and Cascade but the Apollo, Citra and Nelsons have a much higher AA%. This means so much bitterness could overshadow the actual flavour of the hops.
I would reduce the 60min additions for the high AA by half and maybe increase the 0min and steep additions.
See what the taste is like after primary before dry hopping as you may not need to.

Can't be arsed to keep changing this bit, so, drinking some beer and wanting to brew many more!
Sir, you are drunk! Yes madam, and you are ugly, but in the morning I shall be sober! - WSC

I'd use a neutral bittering hop such as Magnum at the start of the boil then do additions at 15,10,5 minutes plus an 80 deg steep.
In or near Norwich? Interested in meeting up monthly to talk and drink beer? PM me for details.

cheers for your thoughts fellas.
having a look at the kippling recipe in the recipe section i think i ll start this weekend witht the nelson sauvin, it suggests a 3 times addition at flameout so think will follow suit and have 20g, 20g, 60g

You'll get a much more even test of the hop flavours this way, without such a massive fluctuation in bitterness.

Or use a program to work out the theoretical IBU contribution, and go by that. ie: 20 IBU @60; 10 IBU @10; equal amounts (probably the same weight as your 60min addition) at flame out and steep...
Re: generic hopping schedule requested
How often are you going to brew? Six hops, you could be comparing one beer conditioned six months longer than another.filet o fish wrote: cascade, citra, nelson sauvin, bramling cross and appollo.

I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

hiya vacant. every fortnight.i know it wont be a very scientific comparison . i am just aiming for " i like that " , "not so keen on that" .
Re: generic hopping schedule requested
so last ones in the bottle now. went, 20,20, 60 on all of them.
Nelson Sauvin head and shoulders the best so far.
