Hops which to buy? (Which are your go to Hops?)

Post by DC » Thu Oct 18, 2012 12:12 pm

Hi all, I am about to use the last of my Challenger hops up in a Russian Imperial Stout and I am looking to stock up on hops for the next few brews, but I am wondering which hops to purchase next :?: I know most of you will have said to yourself by now it depends on what type of beer I want to brew next :?: But I was wondering what if I wanted to choose a hop variety for example say Fuggles or EKG how many different different beers could I brew using just those 2 main hops? What I want to get away from is buying 100g of hops to use 7g in a recipe and have the remaining 93g sitting until I brew that beer again or find a recipe that I can use them up in. Does this make sense to anyone :?: or am I planning my beers back to front :?

Cheers DC

What a great idea,

You will get hundreds of English pale, bitter and brown ale recipes from those hops, almost all of the Graham wheeler clones. If you added Challenger as well then you have another fistful at your disposal including the Marc Olloson recipes and David Line's. Then there are the historical brews which were mostly goldings and fuggles.

We must be into thousands of recipes by now. :)

I and a few mates have just done a similar thing, 5k of challenger, goldings and fuggles split between three of us. Worked out about a quid per 100g and hops for a year you would like to think. 8)

Hi Clive, thanks for the reply and the reminder about the brewing books ! I've got the Dave line, GW books so I am going to dig them out and have a look through ! Who needs the Internet for recipes ! I wouldn't mind clubbing together with a few people and buying a bulk lot of say 3 types of Hops as you have suggested ! But I don't have the facilities too rebag/vacuum pack hops ! Does anyone else fancy doing a bulk buy and splitting hops ?

Fingers crossed

Oh there's a surprise... Sovereign. Can't shift em cos they're horrible. My very local Hop grower, who has a couple of acres of them, asked me about them and I had to concur that as a brewers hop they are rubbish. I know there are a few who like them and as they say "each to their own" but I just can't brew a half decent beer with them.

Can't be arsed to keep changing this bit, so, drinking some beer and wanting to brew many more!
