Quick help please?

Post by Jules T » Wed Feb 20, 2013 9:33 pm

I'm just about to start my boil on a Hophead recipe which calls for cascade 25g@90mins, 60g@5mins, 60g@flame out.

The problem i have is that i've just realised that i only bought 100g

Other hops i have in stock are Challenger, Progress, Fuggles and Bramling cross.

can anyone advise me what i could substitute out of that lot to replace the 45g shortfall in the cascade?

any other suggestions greatfully received [-o<

Use some Challenger at 60mins to get the IBUs at that stage then I would go with 60g cascade at 5mins and 40g cascade at flameout.

They are close enough that I would use 25g of challenger. Oh and I meant use it at 90 mins that the recipe calls for not 60 mins... #-o

Thanks mate :flip:

It wouldn't be a proper brew day without a cock up or two

Might be a happy accident/cock up as I think that Challenger for bittering will actually give you a nicer beer at the end of it. I find Cascade has a harshness to it as a bittering hop.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

Well i don't know what it would taste like with the Cascade for bittering but even though its still in the fv on day seven it tastes bloody great :D definitely one of the best two or three beers i've brewed to date, can't wait to see what it tastes like after a couple of weeks conditioning (planning on bottling in the next few days)
