Rhizomes

Post by fido » Wed Feb 20, 2013 5:42 pm

I want to start growing hops this year and I guess this will mean ordering rhizomes from UK. I will be brewing bitter, mild, stout and possibly the odd strong winter ale. I don't know how fussy hops are about soil but here it is sandy and we have less rain and more sun than UK. Can anyone suggest some hop varieties for a beginner like myself wanting to brew the beers mentioned?

Latitude matters with hops. Where are you?

Agreed. You should update the locaction section which appears under your profile, there on the right hand side. Besides helping us answer this question, it's fun for us to see where everyone is from, who lives near to whom, which famous breweries and hops growing districts are nearby, etc, etc, etc.

To do so: click on User Control Panel above, then click on Profile (the second tab), then complete the Location.

We need to know your location, as even if you have bought English hops they will not grow and have the same attributes as ones grown here because of the soil and amount of sunlight received. Cascade for example are very different in each continent. I hate to say it but I think the New Zealand ones are the best.
Let us know before you buy and advice will be very forthcoming. :)

Well, it would sure be easier for us all to grow hops if we lived on Paradise Island with no pests, no diseases, no floods, no droughts, no competitive invasive species... :)

Those hobbits can be a bit of a pest though. Long-lived, boisterous, unhygienic hairy feet and no natural predators since one of them got rid of that ring.

I'm in south west Hungary. I actually have hops growing wild up some of my conifer trees so I'm hopeful of success if I can identify suitable varieties. I'm in UK just now so I want to get the rhizomes before I troll back to Hungary.
