Beata hop brew

Post by BlackRocksBrewery » Fri Mar 01, 2013 10:47 pm

We all LOVE beer and I know that anyone looking at this will love hops.
I was won over by the description of Beata from Worcester Hop Shop.
Then I read that brewers were frightened by this particular hop.
I decided to do a single hop brew to see what this hop can produce. Although we aure told the AA is only 3.6 I believe we should assume nearer 6-7% because of the high beta oils.
My recipe is for a 5 UK gall batch.

3.2kg Pale malt. ( I have used Dingemans malt but currently doing a comparison with the WONDERFUL Fawcetts Maris Otter.)
250g pale crystal malt
250g Vienna malt

50g Beata - 60 min boil.
50g Beata - 15 min boil

Yeast - White Labs WLP 007 (I love it)

Early days yet but will let you know what I think about the Beata. I have sniffed the fermentation and it seems good but comments on the panel seem poor. Let us see. Will speak again within a month.

I'm very interested. Can't wait to hear your impressions on the finished beer.

I haven't bittered with beata, I was too worried about miscalculating bitterness.I have used it as all aroma and dry hop though. It can be pretty full on. I have had good success using it along with other hops. Got a simcoe, cascade, beata amber ale on at the moment and i'm definitely getting the peach off it.

Interested to see how yours turns out.

The Beata brew has been in the Corni for 26 days and I have been sipping it occasionally. I was not impressed at first but now after drinking 2 pints it is a pleasant fruity tasting beer. I have some more Beata hops and I will brew with them again BUT I think I will follow Bob3000's line and use it for aroma and flavour but not as a bittering hop.
The other beers I have on at the moment - using the same malt recipe - are a Progress/Liberty and Citra/Cascade. I really like both of these and they have much more character than the Beata. I know that it will be expected with two hops, but I regularly do single hop beers with more character.
However, I would love to hear from anyone who has had more success than me. I will write again if my next brew - probably with Centennial - is any good.
ps just had another beer while writing this and it is a good session pale ale ie ok but no wow!
