chuck aroma hop pellet bag in FV?

Post by jmc » Sat May 18, 2013 6:40 pm

I normally use whole hops. For today's brew ( just cooling in FV) I used cascade and endeavour pellets in a muslin hop bag 5 mins from end of boil. Hop bag still smells lovely when fished out of boiler to sanitised jug prior to pour. Wondering. Should I add hop bag to FV? Anyone do this?
Cheers John

If you dry hop for a long time then you can get grassy flavours in your beer. There is some argument that fermentation will drive off hop aroma (argued a little in 'For the love of hops'. Still don't really know the answer)

So it could be a little detrimental to flavour/pointless. I have never done it though so why not give it a whirl?

Thanks for advice Belter.
I didn't add to FV at start of brew. Will try dry hopping in FV when died down a bit. Cheers

I suppose it would depend on what boiling did to the the oils that hop aroma is derived from. If they are driven off in the 5 minutes of the boil then there would be no point. Although different hops react slightly differently to the boil my experience is that aroma is better achieved in dry hopping the fermentor rather than late additions.
I am "The Little Red Brooster"

Fermenting:
Conditioning:
Drinking: Southwold Again,

Up Next: John Barleycorn (Barley Wine)
Planning: Winter drinking Beer

Thanks orlando.
Fermentation gone really quick so planning on dry hopping with some Endeavour pellets shortly in nylon bag with some SS washers to weigh it down.
