Hop Pellet Advice Please
Hop Pellet Advice Please
Hello,
Could anyone advise me how to use Hop Pelets in a nylon Hop bag 8" X 15" with a drawstring. Should I try and suspend the bag or weigh it down in the wort. The pellets I have bought smell fresh and look incredibly green. Unlike lots of leaf hops. What shall I do?. Advice please?.
Any replies thanks

Re: Hop Pellet Advice Please
Weigh it downin you can and add 10% more hops to compensate for the lower extraction due to the hop bag.

Hi Morten,
What would you weigh the bag down with. How about glass marbles or 15mm copper manifold pie.
cheers

Re: Hop Pellet Advice Please
Are you using them in the boil or for dry-hopping?
If its in the boil then I would be careful about weighing the bag down in case it catches on the bottom of the kettle.
If you are dry hopping I don't bother with a bag at all. Just chuck them in and they float for a while and break up before slowly cascading down through the beer. They then settle on the bottom with the yeast.

If you do decide to weigh them down then I would avoid the marbles. If one of them broke in the boil I would be paranoid that some slivers of glass somehow escaped the bag and were somewhere in the beer...

Re: Hop Pellet Advice Please
In the biol I just chuck em in. My filter is only designed for whole hops but I find if I have sime whole hops in as well they act as an auxillary striner and nothing blocks. If you want to dry hop a cornie with pellets I sterilise a hop bag and a heavy shot glass as a weight and find the bag contains them fine
Re: Hop Pellet Advice Please
thanks raiderman,
Iwill be using about 30 grms of leaf hops to help with the trub. I plan to use about 40 grms of pellets at different stages during the boil in 50 litres of wort. Will trub be the problem with only using 30 grms of leaf?. I am trying to design a whirpool my boiler has a recess in the centre and I have made a jig to hold my copper coil central in the boiler.
Happy brewing

I have no idea - you're way beyond me technologically! I just have a copper pipe with holes in it!
