Golden Tassel aka Dwarf Golden hops

Post by Jeltz » Sat Jul 27, 2013 10:08 am

A friend has offered me a crop of Golden Tassel (Dwarf golden) hops which he has growing in pots at his house, he bought them for their appearance, isn't a brewer but does like ale :)

I see that some brewers have grown them but can't find info on how any brews have turned out. I'm happy to give them a test with a gallon batch but it would be useful to know if they are a waste of time or if not what kind of flavour they might impart and any idea on AA % i.e. if they are high or low etc.

Anyway a few weeks before harvest time.

They aren't considered brewing hops, on account of the very low alpha acids. You could theoretically brew with them, a ton of them, but most likely it still wouldn't be very bitter, and you'd run the risk of so much dissolved vegetal matter it might have that "brocolli stew" thing going on. It might be an interesting experiment, but I'd keep the batch size small to keep the costs down.

Thanks for that.

Does that mean they are also poor choice for aroma hops, flame out additions or dry hopping?

I believe they are more decorative than useful, due to their colour, a bit like the July variety which does what it says on the tin... flowers in July but bloody useless for brewing!

Can't be arsed to keep changing this bit, so, drinking some beer and wanting to brew many more!
