Can I grow hops like this?

Post by JammyBStard » Sun Oct 13, 2013 1:53 pm

I've had a few green hop beers for the first time this week and I'm very impressed. Much better than I was expecting. I particually liked The Hop Studio's Beerjolaise.
It's deffinatly time I grew some hops, I've been admiring some of your harvests this year with envy.
I was sorting out my wood store today. It's open on two sides but well sheltered with a poly corrigated plastic roof. It get's quite warm in summer but not really hot. I was wondering If I'd be able to grow some hops in large planters and train thems up string on the back wall and then down string following the joists so I had hops hanging from the ceiling the way you often see grapes grown.
Somthing like this:

Do you think they would like it?

They'd be better off outside.

If you tried it you should probably keep it well ventilated as a humid environment might encourage pests and disease...

this pic does make it look a lot more closed in than it is. The Green fence is 50% open and the end the photo is taken from is completely open. I might try one in there this year and send one up the outside of the house. Are they best on South facing walls?

You're gonna have a hell of a time training them back down the string when all they want to do is go up. Can they not go the other side of the fence or is that your boundary? South facing is the best position as they do like as much sun as possible.

And don't forget, you won't be able to judge success until at least the second year's harvest.

Yes the fence is the boundry. the logs will have gone by spring though so I could put them on the otherside of the shelter and keep them on my side.
I suppodse the beuty of the hops being perennials you cut back is that if you plant them in pots and they dont work out well, you can always move them the next year.

How about growing a dwarf variety like Prima Donna?

I'd say that's an ideal place to grow them make sure the pots are big enough and give them a couple of years to establish!

I covet your wood pile JB 8)

All being well with whatever you try, that would just be an excellent man cave on a September afternoon just before the hops are ready to pick, kicking back with a beer and taking in the hop/wood vibe. My idea of heaven.
