If you have a hop related question about International Bittering Units or alpha acid, post it here!

Yes! The beer won't be contaminated by the hops. The beer has alcohol and the hops are a natural preservative.
I dry hop in keg regularly . I use a muslin hop bag and I attatch it to the dip tube by using a paper clip. Using whole hops, it floats beneeth the surface of the beer and does not block the dip tube.
Also, I have dry hopped in secondary a number of times and when I do, I add multiple additions of hops, generally at the beginning of secondary and then 4 days prior to racking to freshen up the aroma, this method works wonderfully , especially if you follow it up with dry hops inkeg!! 8)

tim,

just to let you know, this is the first time i had left hops in this long (nearly two months in secondary as i was waiting for my cornie setup). I can safely say that it worked out wonderfully. This was easily my best brew and I can see myself dry hopping in the keg as a matter of course from now on. I have discovered a downside to cornie kegs though - you drink the beer too bloody quickly  - I finished the keg at the weekend so I'll have to up the frequency of brewing and/or get a second keg. Ah well....

Ted, DaaB, Niall - thanks for your reassuring words and persuasive logic - IPA I brewed saturday will be dry hopped :D

Niall - I'd get that corny on order

Digging up an old thread, but i find the find S/S mesh tea balls are perfect for adding hops to the keg; they are very popular here in Aus. I'm sure they are available pretty cheaply locally, but you can see a pic here if you are not sure what I'm talking about http://craftbrewer.com.au/index.php?pag ... &Itemid=29

cheers Ross

Is the any chance the hops could infect the beer? I know the bag needs boiling, but dry hops are ok?

to be honest i don't even think you need a ping pong ball or float - I put a big marble into mine to sink it in the secondary, and the feckin thing is STILL floating on the surface! Go figure!?!?
I think the hops will naturally wanna float anyway - they certainly do in the boil...

I know you have to sterlise thye muslin bag, but is there not a chance that the whole hops need sterelising? or do you just stick them straight into the bag? what rate would you use fuggles in a 5 gallon brew?

just sling the hops in. If you're putting them in the primary, then I tend to wait for the yeast to get going. They'll usually out compete any other bugs for food, so you shouldn't have a problem. If you're putting them in after the primary then the alcohol should make the beer resistant to infection.

I usually go for between 1 and 2oz for a 5 gallon batch
