Hop supplier disappointment

Post by Rookie » Sun Feb 04, 2024 3:49 pm

At the local homebrew club Christmas party I received a pretty good supply of hop samples from a hop company a couple states away.
I thought I lucked out until I opened one to use and it smelled like vomit. Almost all of them had the same smell to some degree. The few that didn't smell awful had no smell at all. Needless to say I tossed the lot into the bin.
I'm not all that upset about it as they were free, but because of this I'll never buy anything from them. It seems to me like a bad business decision to give away bad product to someone who might be a paying customer some day. They'd have been better served to toss them and get a tax writeoff.
I'm just here for the beer.

Ok mate thanks. I’ll make sure to avoid them.
I have dealt with John at Northwest Hop farms in Canada and found them reliable. I bought quite a few different UK varieties from them and all were superb. Great prices too.

I've been doing some checking and it may not be their fault. I've been contacted by Michigan hop allience and was told they don't deal in sizes smaller than one pound, so the ones I got must have been repackaged and at this point MHA has no control over how the hops are handled.

And they don't give out samples.

Michigan hop allience has gone above and beyond in customer service. Even though they didn't provide the samples I received and I didn't actually buy anything from they sent me some hops on the house.
